It was so much simpler when phones had both a usb (multiple use) and hdmi port. You could easily charge and view. No extra dongle (which has been problematic for some).

    Oh, well, progress????????????????????????????????????????

Well, not including an hdmi port makes it cheaper to produce the phone and lower the sales price. Some folks don't need hdmi output.

Also, one less hole if it falls into water!

Or you could look at it as an additional hole to aid in sucking water out :0

The slimport I bought has a USB input on the side for charging. So you can charge while connected to the hdmi

I'm actually waiting for my third slimport to arrive in the mail. Reliability of one is less than 2 months for me.

I just bought 2 Chromecast devices today. Going to see how they work. Got 1 to hook up to my DVD home theater system for streaming media and one to hook up to an older stereo receiver in another room that has larger, better speakers for music.

I guess a lot of people already have spare HDMI cables hanging around from years ago :-)

Chromecast dongle would have to be a new purchase.

    FYSA,

I attempted to try to thwart the poor reliability of slimport by creating a stand alone video docking station. I used the BlackBerry charge stand with slimport attached to back, and BlackBerry 2.0 charger plugged into slimport, therefore eliminating the need to always plug and unplug the adapter in the hopes of lengthening it's service life. It didn't work. Display would blank in and out stating HDMI connected, HDMI disconnected. If it cycles enough like this, the phone rejects the slimport adapter until you restart phone. True Story.
