I am pretty confident BlackBerry isn't interested in selling phones to people who have to scrimp and save. Companies don't sell Cadillacs at Chevy pricing. The Priv is a premium phone that is selling at a premium price. For BlackBerry to be successful, they need to make a connection with the consumers that see value in the premium features. If you don't see value in the PKB, then the Priv isn't the device for you. Similarly, if you don't see value in security updates being provided on a regular basis, then the Priv isn't the device for you.
Bell in Canada is offering the Priv with a two year contract for $299. Considering in 2010 I paid $149 for a Samsung Galaxy Son a three year contract, I think that's a fair a deal as anyone will get. Again, you either want the phone or you don't want the phone. BlackBerry is in a position where they must maximize ASP of the phones they are selling even if means Privs don't make it into the hands of the unwashed masses.
