I know everyone's carrier is different, but in my case it is much cheaper to get phone on contract than buy unlocked, over the course of two years.

So I am trying to see if there are advantages to the unlocked version other than being unlocked, and not having a contract.

Do the unlocked phones get updates from BlackBerry sooner, because the updates don't have to be approved by the carrier?

Will we be able to install leaks on the Priv, like with previous BB's? If this is the case I don't really care about official updates from carrier, I'll just manually install updates like I have with my z30.

The first nobody here knows and you will have to take on trust - if they do update the phone then it is *likely* to be quicker than from carriers.

Same for installing leaks, nobody has any idea if this is possible until they handle the phone and see what physical and software security the phone has.

Bottom line is - whatever the phone, be it from BBRY or anyone else - always buy on what it can do out of the box...

I am hoping similar to the BB10 pattern, where as long as the leak is signed by Blackberry, you can install it. Hard to imagine that this would not be the case again the more I think about it.

All my BlackBerry devices have been from a carrier, so I have never paid attention if BlackBerry pushed updates to them sooner, but I guess it would make sense that they do get them first.

Seems like as along as the carrier doesn't fill. The device with bloat ware (which Telus doesn't) , and there is no financial reasons, then a carrier device is just as good. But like you said, we will see.
