I stupidly sat on a rail with my Priv in my back pocket and cracked. The screen is cracked and theres like a small hole on the top layer of glass. It seems like the glass beneath is responsive to touch. What happens if I just scared the top layer of glass off and expose they bottom layer? Would it still be functional? Maybe it would not look cracked in the process? I'd love to replace it but the parts are just too expensive right now.

Search youtube. There are a couple takedown videos there. I believe you can remove and replace the glass without any other disassembly.

I don't intend to replace the glass, it looks easy enough to do. I mean to scrap off the top layer of glass to expose what's underneath

I don't understand. If you take the glass off you have to replace it.

I believe that user wants to peel off the very top, very thin, protective layer (which is cracked) - if it can be separated from the main screen layer and if it is not necessary for the digitizer to function???????????

Yes, the top layer is part of the digitizer assembly. I'm not sure how that would function properly without it.

Right, but it's just a top layer. Underneath the display seems fine, it seems responsive to touch as well.

You can be the first on your block, maybe the first in the world.......... Go for it and report back. I can imagine that that layer would be very subject to scratching. If it peels as easily as an onion, it might work.

It's replaceable too, if you can get the broken one off without destroying the digitizer and screen.

It's NOT easy to do, but it's possible -- and the actual glass is cheap (like $15)

My top glass broke as well, and i've been removing it piece by piece. I think i can get it all the way off but i'm not sure. The screen underneath looks covered in an adhesive of some sort.
