Radio Shack sold "tuner / contact cleaner" spray containing PCB now off market... what's down there that could get damaged with a teensy burst of that?

Isopropyl alcohol will clean the port decently. Be sure to get 90 percent or above, not rubbing alcohol. simply dip the end of your cord in it, or dab a little in the port with a q-tip and plug and unplug the cord a few times. It will dry quickly.

Just curious, what leads you to believe the contacts are dirty if the cord needs to face down etc to make a proper connection? The port itself may be damaged or bent out of alignment, assuming there is no issue with the cord or charger. I believe others have griped about the 'delicacy' of the PRIV usb port so you would not be the first...

Speaker cone is right by the charge port, no idea what it's made of, but most of the standard materials will tear and or deform if activated while wet, or damp.
I doubt most contact cleaners will hurt it, just turn phone off until the cone has had a chance to completely dry.
OP is on here a lot, so I'm sure you have run across all the other threads about failing usb ports. And note that all usb ports are designed to self clean the contacts by friction when inserting and removing. Course that doesn't mean they won't get get dirty or corroded.

"Standard USB has a minimum rated lifetime of 1,500 cycles of insertion and removal,[53] the the mini-USB receptacle increases this to 5,000 cycles,[53] and the newer Micro-USB[53] and USB-C receptacles are both designed for a minimum rated lifetime of 10,000 cycles of insertion and removal.[54] To accomplish this, a locking device was added and the leaf-spring was moved from the jack to the plug, so that the most-stressed part is on the cable side of the connection. This change was made so that the connector on the less expensive cable would bear the most wear.[8][55]"
Course you aren't going to get the 10,000 if the manufacturer used el-cheapo port.
    Another plus for wireless charging.

Misery persists and worse... back on passport for now & frankly enjoying the PKB which is sooo much better & not missing the dastardly ALT key hunt one bit ... what are the odds it's just grime? Or is it more likely terminal terminal damage in the USB? If iopen the phone, is this a soldering job or what? Anywhere to get that part?

Weeezard... if part can be had, are any mail in repair schemes known to be competent? I have a 200G microSD card so I will backup everything there, do a factory reset to wipe all, and send it in if I can figure out where...

OK I bought a few on ebay and I looked at the video and am not confident at this juncture to do what I would assume is needed which is replacement of the USB... needs soldered at best and after opening the whole thing and removing the mother board to get at it, I would guess this needs a professional with such skills... sooo, where to find that species ink the USA?

I think the easiest solution is to use a wireless charger. I bought one and have been happy with it. I was having the same trouble with my charging cords.

You could also make a quick visit to a carrier that sells accessories and plop it down on a charging pad with an inquiry if it works?
