On BlackBerry's website they have the Priv's battery capacity listed as 3410 mAh.

Which seemed odd to me normally a company would write 3400 mAh.

But everyone who has opened up the device shows that the battery is really only 3360 mAh.

Why is BlackBerry lying about the size of the battery?

You might want to head over to the Microsoft site and complain about how the os is only supposed to take up X number of space, but ends up being more.

While your at it, go to any company that produces hard drives or USB keys, the second you format them the sizes are smaller than advertised and paid for.

If your gonna gripe over small stuff, go big or go home!!!

Yes but a hard drive does truly have the capacity before you format it.

A 3360 mAh battery never in no way could have 3410 mAh.

It's not a big deal I am just wondering why BlackBerry would why about a thing so minimal.

It's probably a variance in all batteries. They're all between 3360 and 3410.

3410 mAh is the rated or typical capacity, 3360 is the minimum. Batteries have some variance to them. Its similar to rechargeable standalones as you can see here. eneloop XX 2500mAh Typical / 2400 mAh Minimum, High Capacity 4 pk

BlackBerry is definitely lying about the PRIVacy the Priv is supposed to provide. I think that's a bigger issue to be concerned about.

I tested a bunch of radios where spec is 23dBm +/- 2dBm. The majority were just over 24dBm and none of them less than 23.1dBm. The software was always going to report it was 23dBm. Spec sheet was changed to 24dBm because there were measured results to back it. I imagine similar thing happened here.

There's lots of industries where products are all produced the same way but binned according to actual quality.

You are complaining about the difference between 3360 mAh versus 3410 mAh, a difference of 1.47% .
Let's assume that the battery is supposed to last 18 hours each day, or 1080 minutes - the difference of 1.47% is 16 minutes per day.
In my view, the question of "Why is Blackberry lying" seems rather harsh and lacking in perspective. If you are really concerned, write to Blackberry before you accuse them of lying - perhaps there is a simple explanation. Have a good day.

I thought it was because the 3360 is in US mAh but with the conversion, it works out to 3410 in Canadian mAh.

If you read my post I'm not angry I'm not complaining.

I'm just confused as to why BlackBerry is lying about something so small.

Your proving my point it is only a 1.47% difference like if they were going to lie and bump up the specs why didn't they say the battery was 3800 mAh or something?

It's something so small that doesn't even make sense to "fudge".

    I've seen three opened.

The Karalux video, JerryRigEverything, and one more on YouTube.

I would if I owned one but I haven't pulled the trigger on a Priv yet.

Would like to wait until at least tomorrow so I can see how well they have been selling.

As a practical matter the battery is NOT as good as advertised, which I'm hoping is just a software issue which can be improved with time. My iPhone 6 Plus is a champ, but my Priv barely makes it through the day. HOWEVER I have seen improvements with this latest firmware so there IS hope. As other have said lying is too strong of a word here!

Yes, a fairly easy guess. The design and target (average) capacity is 3410 mAh, and the lower testing tolerance before rejection is 3360. I make that about 1.5% which seems reasonable in a batch sampling test environment. What probably happens is that a sample of 'n' batteries is tested from each production batch and results assessed by one of two methods. The most common method is that if more than a specified number from the sample group is

QUOTE=BCITMike;12082661]3360 might be minimum spec, 3410 might be real world average. There's a +/- with all specs.

Fair question but batteries similar to resistors have a variability. It's not unusual.

True enough, I don't have a major issue with it, and I DO feel battery life will improve in time. Apple had similar issues with early iphones and ipads, but they improved the software over time. I have seem BB work miracles in this regard in the past too! so I still have faith!

Everything has a tolerance. A battery manufactured to provide 3410 mAh could have a spec of +/- 5%. That would mean it could realistically provide as low as 3239 mAh and as high as 3580 mAh. The marking on the battery is probably the TYPICAL rating. I have been working in the electronics industry for over 30 years.
