Blackberry the insecure sinecure
It's secure as long as you have a current phone. Welcome to NWO. It's not like you have other choices.
You replace phones every two years or sooner.
Good for you if that's what you do, change phones every two years, others have different priorities.
Btw, I got my brand new priv in December 2016.
You can keep using PRIV. BlackBerry exited hardware so they don't have to be part of the problem.
You can buy Android/IOS devices that meet your criteria. Post for everybody, the device that meets those criteria. From what I can read, Android 2 years, IOS 4 years. On annualized basis, either OS runs about same $$$$
Ummm.... Security updates are software ...
The device you bought is hardware. You don't see EU forcing updates on any of the other cheap Android phones do you?
No idea, I don't live in the EU.
It's the software BlackBerry has informed they're no longer supporting.
So what's your point? They supported the required two years from introduction.
Woooooot ...... 😂
You have an idea called two years and now it's official BlackBerry stuff .... convenient ..... 😂
BlackBerry the insecure sinecure .... how apt. ...
So what exactly is your complaint about?
See the first post ...
I did. BlackBerry did two years on the PRIV. What more do you want?
Not if there is nothing available that even comes close to meeting your needs and wants.
Either
1- A phone comparable to the Priv. - There isn't one, and prob never will be.
2- A Software company that touts Security to continue Software Security updates through life of the Software.
BlackBerry obviously wants to completely wash their hands of mobile devices, but still want some revenue from them. By stopping the Software Security updates early, if even only by a couple of months, BB has just done more damage to it's now very tarnished reputation as a Software company and a Security conscious company.
To be completely pedantic for a second, they did state that they would consider "engage(ing) our partners as needed to develop and deliver necessary patches" if a serious vulnerability in the Priv is exposed on a go-forward basis.
That's certainly not a guarantee of anything, but it's better than a punch in the face.
Thurber also said that, in Blackberry's opinion, most of the monthly patches they have delivered for the Priv in the past two years were actually unnecessary, because their underlying secure boot chain provided its own mitigation against most attacks. (To be clear, I am not aware of any successful root attack against the Priv at any point in its release cycle.)
You weren't promised updates for life. No phone gets updates for life.
Should I be mad at Apple that the iphone 4s I use in my car for music is stuck on IOS 9? Updates, dammit, I need UPDATES!
It really hasn't. I can all but guarantee you that none of their software customers care that the Priv won't get anymore updates. If anything, they're probably happy that Blackberry has freed up more manpower and resources for their core business.
Little be known, 3-year contracts are still a thing for Corporate accounts over $2500/mo up here in Canada. So a lot of those now out of support Privs are actually still being paid for at the moment.
But Thurber did implied updates will continue till some time next year as long as Google puts out the patches. Go to 37:20.

I should've known when he added "other reasons" at the end, with BlackBerry telling customers to pound sand being one. You can see his face there, be like "quit asking."
I never said BB owes us updates, or is required to, or even promised to. But they without a doubt, lead us to believe the software would be updated till Google retired the OS.
Every BB customer is looking at this, and it's generating a little bit of doubt. And quite possibly rereading their contracts.
