...Now, the question is whether consumers will agree. Preorders began last month, and Beard said initial sales top anything in recent memory, though he didn’t provide any specific numbers.

“Relative to Passport, Classic and Leap, and [over the] same time frame, this is magnitudes better than those launches,” Beard said, adding that for the first time in ages, BlackBerry could have more demand than supply for a product.

“I’m a little worried about making sure I have enough,” said Beard, who is also in charge of BlackBerry’s manufacturing operations. “It’s a good problem to have.”

Unlike recent device launches, BlackBerry is also getting some support from carriers, though not from all of them. AT&T plans to carry the Priv in stores, and all of Canada’s major carriers are on board. The unlocked version that BlackBerry sells on its site also supports the LTE network of T-Mobile. Other U.S. carriers may also stock the Priv, though they aren’t expected to do so at launch.

Well it's not that surprising as it is Android, but crucial for future BB10 devices.

An order of magnitude has a technical meaning. It means a 10X difference.

For example, Chen said 200,000 Passports sold at launch. If there was an order of magnitude difference with Priv, 2 million Privs would be sold. If so, that would be a promising start.

Do I believe this? No. Not without real numbers.

Here's the problem - the Passport sold out in six hours in terms of pre-order numbers on the BBRY site - now it could be that that it was a really low number like 50 units or so but I doubt it. The Priv failed to sell out in a week on their own sites and we had an idea of how it was going because we could see the stock numbers. The glitch that allowed you to see stock is still accessible on the UK site and my estimate in that about ten days they have sold slightly less than 400 units.

The other problem is that if they had pre-orders of two million units, we wouldn't be debating this - they would have rushed press releases out that might not give the numbers but would contain the words "pre-orders in the millions" to every single news organisation in existence. Moreover with that sort of run-away number, you would have see a ramp in marketing to capitalise on it - because Chen would hit his five million target in weeks of launch.

Based on search traffic and the low pre-order numbers I think maybe 100,000 units is more realistic this quarter.

You forgot about CPW and their little "exclusivity" again, and just focusing on SBB. It appears they sold out since they were cancelling preorders.

But if I remember correctly they also had that for the passport... (them or Selfridges) so I forget nothing. :-)

Speaking of remembering - Do you not remember articles about how the Passport was one of the fast selling devices ever and how there were near-riots at selfridges as people fought to got hold of one. How it was trumped at launch as beating all previous BB10 devices and yet when the quarterly earnings come around... How it was claimed here as proof of suppressed demand?

this isn't specific to BBRY by the way, all OEMS claim their launches are going well...

I actually do think it will sell better than the BB10 devices and to be honest I go backwards and forward on the number because the true X-factor is the keyboard - but two million?

    No.

So is it officially an ATT exclusive?

I purchased one outright already on shopbb, but wanted to get a second through Tmo JUMP for my Fiance-put $300 down, and just roll $15-20 into my bill interest free...

If they don't have it on release, I have to guess whether a second shopbb order would arrive before other carriers get it. Hopefully they don't actually sell out and cause a long delay.

To be fair - the role of the exec is to promote confidence in the products and the company as a whole - and that appears to all listed companies not just BBRY - which is why I find it best to ignore what they say and like you stick to the filings

We will all talk in circles on this but we are at least three months from knowing (unless they 'pull a HP') which I cannot see.

That wouldn't be better than Passport.

Want to see a magic trick? How Priv sales could be below 200,000 and also better than passport sales?

That 200,000 was for purchase orders in the channel (see q2 2015 results transcript), we never found out how many of that initial 200,000 went straight into the hands of consumers. So it could have been (made-up number) 10,000. The Priv made have channel orders of 100,000 but 11,000 are straight to consumers...

(for earnings purposes they have know switched to that second number in their filings - but this happened after passport launched).
