I am using a mobile wifi device so I don't want my PRIV running updates in the background. I have switched off autoupdate (in the Google Play store settings menu) but they are still downloading and updating.

Is this a Priv thing? Do I have to switch it off somewhere else as well?

It's not a Priv thing, or at least, it should not be. The Priv is no different from any other Android device, when it comes to the OS. As for the issue, it's possible that if you explicitly enabled auto updating at the app level for any apps in the past, that it's seeing the override at the app-level and taking that as priority over the setting within the Google Play Store. To sort this out, go into each update that is persisting with the auto updating, and tap the menu button -> uncheck auto update.

Go into your Play Store app. Select the 3 stacked dash marks on the top left corner. Select settings. Then auto update. Should be 3 choices. Select Do not Auto update.
