Simple version: QNX is the software that works with the computer chip to allow programmers to build Operating Systems and Applications.
RIM liked it so much, they bought the company.
That's cool, but what does it do do? Does it work with email or make storage or do something fancy for security???
This will eventually be part of the Blackberry OS.
Cariw91, try reading the links provided to you. Or better yet, there is this really neat search engine out there called Google. =)
I did read the links above and still don't understand. For the record you should google "what is qnx" and see what comes up before suggesting I do it.

To really understand, watch a demo video of a playbook, the playbook is running qnx operating system. Our blackberrys are java, playbook is QNX and eventually phones will be qnx based

QNX means that most of the limitations and problems of BlackBerry OS will be eliminated, without losing the benefits of the system.
Qnx is something R.I.M needs to succeed or else they'll be well......you know....
QNX is an operating system that will be used as the foundation for the next BB OS.
QNX Neutrino is a highly secure, real-time operating system. It uses a microkernal architecture which means that every application/program that is opened exists separately from the others. If one program has a problem it will not stop the others from running. It is very powerful and brings RIM closer to providing a desktop computer experience on mobile devices.

it's a different operating system, and it's written in adobe air which means it is much better for develping on. case closed.
Have a look at QNX Realtime Operating System (RTOS) software, middleware, development tools and services for superior embedded design.
QNX is an OS based on Posix, not UNIX or Linux. It was developed for the automotive industry principally.
QNX is a message passing OS. This makes it easy for hardware, drivers and apps to communicate using simple internal protocols. It also makes multi-tasking, task-switching and make prioritization relatively easy.
I was skeptical about QNX's suitability for use on a phone but having thought about it for a while and now knowing that RIM has bought the company, I am now convinced that sufficient development effort will be put in to make a great success of the transition.
I should add that QNX has no user interface. As an embedded OS it reacts to incoming messages, precess, despatches and reacts by operating hardware and perhaps sending other messages too.
It is worth noting that 95% of Intel's CPU business is for embedded products. For instance there is a 386 (yes, really) under the pilot's seat of all 747 airliners.
If you forget the UI on an OS the raw switching power of a CPU is simply stunning. Imagine a 1Ghz CPU operating 10 On/Off switches. Knock off say, 50% for OS overhead (too much but it's a round number) you can now switch each switch 50000 times a second.
RIM will now have to put a phone UI onto QNX. How they do that and what restrictiions QNX itself will impose on this remains to be seen.
Right now, if I were Apple, I would be afraid, very afraid. Good.
QNX is a huge next step for RIM, cant wait to see whats coming up next :)
I stand 100% behind QNX. I feel that QNX & BBPB hardware work hand in hand. As for Honeycomb I feel that the OS will always be ahead and to robust for the hardware hence always the need to upgrade. I already see this happening. My Xoom is on ebay as I speak. I will try out the new asus transformer as this has a faster bus speed. I like the idea of having two tabs with unique Os. IOS is a bit to childish for me.
with the acquisition of QNX, does that mean we will finally get Angry Birds for BB's running QNX?
and dont laugh at my Angry Birds comment....thats just because I want to know if that means that compatibility issues will be solved ( for the most part) lol
They did announce Angry Birds for the Playbook. I then assume that it will come to the phones running QNX.
