Try putting a folder with a few apps in on your dock. Assuming you have six icons up there (the folder being one), when you delete the folder, the icons are placed on the dock itself and not on the homescreen.
The dock will be swipable (like the panes) and have more than six icons on it (I currently have 16...

    Edit:
Been a report of disappearing apps doing this since posted, so take be warned.

Hmm, were they all apps that were part of the OS (rather than installed from app world).

Have you done a reboot? That sometimes fixes things.
Touch the battery icon on the home screen and choose restart.

    Oh, I did it.
Geez, now that I've read the post numerous times, I finally understood.
"The folder being one". Yes, now that I have 5 icons AND the folder, I was able to make it work!

    Nice find!
I don't care for it. I'm working on making everthing stay on the home screen, but I think it's brilliant that you found it!

    Good job!

You have to delete them and reinstall them.
This seems to be what happens if there's more than 6 apps in the folder.

Once folder being placed in the dock, then there is no option to delete this folder anymore.
