I'd recommend you stop unnecesary background software like WD file backup.
I turned off WiFi; conencetd via USB to a desktop running UVerse @ 6Mbs.
My log, as well as the install 'burp' follows:
February 21, 2012 4:15 AM started BlackBerry Playbook upgrade to OS 7971
1 -- reminder playbook must be on to connect to desktop.
2 -- turned WiFi off, connected to Windows 7 desktop via USB.
3 -- 4:59 69 modules downloaded via UVerse at 6 Mb connection. Frequent pauses as UVerse had gone out completely at 5:30pm yesterday.
4 -- 7:03 stopped external file monitor, and unnecessary software routines via task monitor: 43 modules downloaded.
5 -- 8:39 module 53: "error has occurred downloading software, verify connection or try again." Retry went back to module six, began past count up to 57. Download continued.
6-- 11:15 module 60 downloading.
7 -- 13:09 all 69 modules downloaded.
8 -- don't forget to move the mouse to prevent the system from going to sleep.
9 -- 23:21 about 60% complete.
10-- move cursor along green bar to keep system from going to sleep and measure progress.
11 -- 29:24 reboot started with message: (this might take up to 30 minutes).
12 -- 30:33 BlackBerry Playbook awake, signature appears on Playbook.
13 -- series of audio cues have started. Green bar at approximately 70%.
14 -- 34:27 "your software update is complete.....Can safely disconnect".
Disconnected USB, started wi-fi.
15 -- display on Playbook: V 2.0 = application update available

Mine went like this:

Woke up at God knows what time to potty.
Hit upgrade on the way back to bed.
Garbage man came and woke me a little.
Turned over and hit yes to whatever the reboot is required message was.
Woke up for real this morning and was all ready to go.

took me 15 min in total from download to install over wifi at work which i guess is T1 since it went by so quickly...it's ok, having trouble finding the folders i had before like Favorites and media but i'm guessing there is a way to do that i hope.

p.s.

the last 2 times i used desktop manager to update anything (when i bought it and now) on the playbook it game me an error midway through install and would stop, but it works fine over wifi.
