No cellphone network, no whatsapp.
Using a wi first PlayBook and have sideloaded whatsapp. Seems to work fine, though I haven't tried to send messages with it yet.
I have gotten whatsapp to work on my playbook with the sideloaded application. During the registration process, you have to enter a phone number (not your current cell number if you have whatsapp installed on your phone already, a landline or google voice number), let it try to text you, and then when it fails, activate it by phone call. Whatsapp will call your phone with a code to enter, and then you will be activated.
You can't use the same number that you use on your cell or your playbook account will take over the cell account. So by using a different phone number essentially you will have 2 whatsapps, one account on your cell and a different account on your playbook. I haven't found a way to get the same account to work on both the playbook and my blackberry, maybe others have had better luck. Also, it will only work when connected to the web (obviously).
Hope this helps.
I sideloaded it as well. You need to have the sim card with the number you entered into the whatsapp in an actual phone to receive the test sms. Once that goes through you will have the functional whatsapp on your pb only on wifi unless you have the 4g playbook. The. You can put that sim card back into playbook from your phone and maybe it'll work somehow. I only tried it on my wifi version. If you try to use the same number on you phone u will have to reverify the number thus losing the access from your pb. I was able to message my friends from my playbook. I never tested it to see if I received messages if the app wasn't open cuz I didn't care enough.
On an another note I emailed Whatsapp and asked the, if they were going to do anything for the playbook bridge such as a whatsapp bridge messaging but they said no. They apparently have no plans for the playbook:(
Sophace,
As you said i tried using your guidelines and it went smooth. After completing all the process the whatsapp gives and error saying "please upgrade your whatsapp version".
Now what should i do.
well you have to do what it tells you :)
i gues you downloaded a converter bar of the app of some of those sites and this version is not working anymore because of some whatsapp changes in the past.
You should download the latest apk and converter it with the online converter, but to get the latest version of the apk without an android phone can be a bit hard tho ;)
Yes, I use it on my Dev Alpha.
Just wait 5 mins for the manual code enter.
Hi Dhriab,
I run into that too but if you ignore the upgrade message whatsapp will still work. Its reminding you to upgrade but when using it on my playbook I find you can ignore it and it still works fine. Is it not working at all for you because of the upgrade message?
Hello, I'm new to this someone please just send me a link for the latest bar file for whatsapp because the one is saying that it is too old for and i need to get the latest version...
can someone help me?
1) Link to latest (and working) whatsapp: Blackberry Playbook Social Media Apps | Good e-Reader Android APP Store - Playbook App Market
2) Receiving whatsapp messages works as long as the app is open. You even hear an audible alert while the app is in the background. Unfortunately, if the app is closed, you won't know that you have received a message.
Thanks i'll check it out
This is the holy grail for me if someone manages to link it up to my Blackberry. Is it even possible on Android or Ios?
Works pretty good on my Playbook. I had to delete it off my 9900 cause it absolutely killed the battery. It's not perfect but it does a great job on the PlayBook. Just wished it worked over bridge. U have to be in wifi for it to work

Damn we need a new messaging app. Whatsapp sucks. It doesnt even have app for ipad and other device. You are actually restricted. People should switch to alternatives soon.
Where do you download the whatsapp app exacly?
Thanks.
whatsapp for os 2.1 is possible . please upload the link ..............................
Anyone has a working bar file of whatsapp for the playbook? the one at goodereader no longer works.
Just download the apk file from the whats app website and just convert to bar file and i am also using the same. Its working fine. But the bad thing is we cant go offline even though u minimize the app.
