Tried what @Robsteve suggested and viola it worked! Now the PB is charging via 2.1A port using a non-data carrying wire. Thanks a lot.

If you really want to be safe, go back on ebay and get the BlackBerry magnetic charger or magnetic charging dock for playbooks. This won't cost much and is faster and safer for your playbook - ( its for the 3 gold prongs )
BTW: the kobo reader app that comes with the playbook (or download free from BB store) has its own brighteness settings, but like I said, I flip to black background and white text for reading.

When I use an ereader on my playbook, I switch from white background / black text to black background and white text = no glare and easily read
