What he said below...read the post please
Full disclosure: the Playbook is the first and only BlackBerry device I own.
I've own many electronic gadgets from many different companies: Apple, Sony, Nintendo, Kobo, Nokia, SonyEriccson, Canon, etc. and the PlayBook is the first device that I have had to return due to manufacturing defect. And if it was only once, then I would say it was bad luck, but I had to go through 3 devices before I found the right one. The first had way too many stuck/dead pixels, the second, had a huge bulge on the back, enough that the PB had no chance of laying flat, and can spin freely on a flat surface. The technician at the store said he's never encounter that big of a defect. The third has a power button that barely works. I am keeping the third one because it is the least worst of the bunch, and there is no guarantee that I will find one that has no defect. I actually really really like the Playbook, and am very glad to have it. The two time I was returning a defective unit, I ran into another customer returning the PB too, but with a different problem. If other people are running, RIM is not making a very good case for people to jump on their ship. I really want RIM to succeed, as competition is good for the consumer, and being Canadian, it is in my interest for them to succeed. BTW, my batch is 1343-52 and has flushed power button.
Your post reads like a troll:
I will establish that I have had a long history with electronic gadgets to show that my criticisms are legitimate. I will give a summary of all the common problems I've read on the forums. I will say that I'm actually saying all this because I'm a fan of product by company, but company really needs to shape up. I will say something that will give me away... "I really want RIM to succeed, as competition is good for the consumer, and being Canadian, it is in my interest for them to succeed". Really? A seasoned electronics gadget owner keeping a device to help consumerism and for national economic reasons?
Man, people on this forums are sensitive! See I am Canadian, and I only use BB devices, and I cannot stand Apple and their cult following, but to say that RIM is as good as it once was...well come on.
Anyway, back on topic here so let's drop the "troll vs. not troll" arguments please.
Wow, really? Being as this was my first post, I really hope this is not the kind of comments I will be getting for this community I just joined. Why don't you just stop being such a and trust people's complaints. Yes, a fan boy troll is bad, but how is that different from you blindingly defend a company and believing that everyone out there is posting to bash your product. Yes, I like apple products, but not all of them. I loved my iPhone 3G before apple F it up. I don't like the iPad because I think 10" is too big, and yes, I do think it's just a giant iPod touch. I loved my PSP for mobile gaming. I love my canon s100 as a camera. etc. My point is, I buy products from which ever company that has a better version. In this case, I think RIM has one of the better tablet (besides the lack of apps). And yes, I want RIM to succeed because I used to go to school and lived in Waterloo. I have friends who still live there, and RIM is a major economic and cultural stimulus in that community, so of course I want them to succeed. I am contributing to the thread by sharing my experiences. So how are you contributing with your douchery comment?
Huh? Are you addressing my post? I didn't say RIM is good as they once were, or think it. I'm just pointing out that the post by evrdazed reads like a troll.
cbvinh, if you believe someone is trolling, there is always the report icon (dark red triangle at the top right of each post). Please, make use of that icon, otherwise every thread will become an accusation thread. Thanks.
My opinion of your post does not represent the quality of the people or responses you will get from this forum. To draw that conclusion would be ridiculous... unless you want to play victim.
Um... I see some curse word must have been edited out. No need to get vulgar.
I don't think everyone is here to bash the Playbook or RIM. I'm pointing out that your post reads like a troll. The format is very similar. Most people just share their experiences without establishing some kind of "I'm an experienced gadget user" and am only saying things in the best interest of competition and Canadian pride/economy.
What you wrote above sounds more realistic. Real gadget users buy things because it suits them, not because they want competition to flourish because of their purchase or because they have national pride. Do you buy electronic gadgets just to be noble? RIM and the Playbook seriously needed your help months ago.
I'll welcome you to these forums and await what else you will share.
Oops, just read this. Thanks!
I'm assuming the digit after the dash is the last digit in the serial number...
1343-2: button raised, no bulge, 16 GB, April 2, 2011
1343-8: button raised, bulge, 64 GB, April 13, 2011
No, the digit after the dash, and for that matter the 5th digit in the serial numbers we were posting to date is exactly that, the 5th digit in the serial number. It appears to correspond to the month of manufacture or something, first month being March/April.
I had a couple versions of the 16GB before and they both had raised buttons, and from the couple versions of the 64 GB I have and encountered, they are all flushed. I didn't take note of the serial number or dates of the models, but they were all bought at around the same time. Logic would dictate that the 16 GB model would sell more, and would be the first to get subsequent production runs. Meaning that the 64 GB that are selling now could still be from the first initial runs. That's my hypothesis.
It is definitely hard to find later production runs of 64GB units. Most of the ones that I ran into, and I had the guys at the store look at several palettes of units were mostly 13431 and 13432 units. We found two 13436 which both had raised power buttons and one 13434 which had a semi-flush but usable power button. Probably 90%+ were with the lower serial numbers.
Uh oh, then the serial number hypothesis is off...
(5th digit is 5th digit)
1343-0: raised button, no bulge, 16 GB, April 2, 2011
1343-2: raised button, bulge, 64 GB, April 13, 2011
Yeah, I did not think that this held 100% true to be honest. I think that it is just a good guideline. As with any other product, later production runs tend to work out kinks and issues from earlier runs and this is no different. Let's put it this way, you are probably more likely to find earlier units with flush or inset buttons than later units :)
Edit: Just an update on my current unit again. It is working flawlessly, occasional crash of the browser which is a software related problem for sure. Performance is good and I retrained the battery so that it properly charges and drains. This has improved my battery life by a couple of hours of aggressive use and stopped the PB from shutting down at 10% battery left.
I own three playbooks (16, 32, 64).
My 16 was perfect (no bulge, raised power button). Manuf. date - May 11th.
My 32, well it had a bulge on the back and I returned it. The second had a power button that was just too recessed so I return it. Third, pretty much perfect (power button could be raised more but as you rarely use it, it is fine). Manuf. date - April 19th.
My 64 which I just got this week, pretty much seems fine. No bulge but power button lowest of the three (not a deal breaker). Everything else seems fine so far. Manuf. date - April 8th.
My friend went through 2 16GB's and eventually upgrade to 32G of which he went through 2 of those. Issues like spec of dust under the screen, bleeding, stuck pixel... Maybe just being too picky, I don't know.
My two cents... there is no guarantee that one built later will be better than an earlier build. So if you find one you like, keep it... Going around to FS and BB scrounging through bins to get one with a later date is just not worth it.
Just to add a couple of more:
1343-2: flush button, 16gb, box date 080411
1343-8: raised button, 64gb, box date 190511
No bulge, dust or pixel issues with either of these units at all. Also, I don't know if box dates mean anything, but they do not come close to 5th digit being month of manufacture.
