I just restarted my Surface Pro and it took under 30 seconds...
Is that a true boot - probably more like resume for suspend / sleep.

Can you remove the power / battery source and confirm a true cold boot time?

The Surface Pro doesn't have a removable battery.

I clicked shut down... took about 5 secs.

Pressed the power on button and timed it with the stopwatch on my torch... took 13 secs to start and navigate back to this page.

Actually I only paid about half since my local casino let me take home $500. That was the deciding factor in buying the Surface Pro.

I seriously doubt that's the same then. I suspect that's just like a resume from standby or hibernation then.

I bet initial boot times, or boot times when the battery is empty and it's properly shutdown take longer.

Here I thought it was going to be about checkerboarding and updates and it's just about the boot up.
It's a good thing your avatar (timely, this week) did not have to wait for boot up or the Pharaoh's army would have overtaken them before the Red Sea parted!

I reboot every night while brushing my teeth. In fact, I battery pull my 9000 at the same time. I pull first cause the 9000 takes a bit longer to load.

Sounds pretty normal to me. Most recent devices boot in 30 seconds or less, some nearing even 5 seconds.

The easy way to tell if that's true boot time, or some enhanced resume from standby / hibernation, is to compare it with when the device has been run down to zero battery (perhaps not a good thing to do with a PlayBook) or if the battery is removable, remove it.

A lot of devices flatter to deceive where startup times are concerned. Faster is not always better.

    Mos Def, blud.

Dat der PlayBook is wicked, innit, bruv.

(I have no idea what those words mean, I just heard people talking like that on PhoneShop, so assumed it's some young, hip, urban thing)

Surface Pro has Intel i3 or i5 so it is fast. Boot time is believable. It runs hot, though. Noisy, too, with fans running...
Surface RT would be better comparison.

ok everyone calm down calm down. if your unhappy with anything in your life you usually either get rid of it or work through it, and when it comes to love you usually always work through it. same applies to the playbook if you love your tech work through it I'm sure if your playbook could speak it would point out many many flaws in you haha
Thank goodness PB can't pick out my flaws, it would drain the battery very fast! LOL. I do love my PB and am living with it. And I've heard it said the machine that she only as good as the user, that explains why mine is slow. =D

Still not buying it, until somebody can manage to time a truly cold boot (battery totally exhausted, or brand new unit, or something like that).

No doubt that CPU performance can influence how quickly something boots, but it's not the only factor. I'm convinced these very short boot times are caused by some funky optimisations.

windows 8 surface pro sounds interesting and all, but do you know what sounds better and mlre practicle for everyday use and only a 100 or 200 dollers more a 13 inch windows 8 ultrabook and guess what you can plug it in so the battery doesn't die in 2 hours

I've heard battery life on surface pro was horrible given the core i3 and core i5 were never meant for mobile

Gooseberry Falls - I've had this Pro for about a month and I have not heard the fans kick on yet, but then again, I was in an artillery unit for a year and my hearing may not be as good as younger people.

Wongsky - Windows 8 was designed for a quick start up, not just for the Pro, but for all computers. It was one of the hyped-up selling points for Windows 8.

Barracuda7772 - The battery life isn't like an ipad or a PlayBook. It won't go 10 hrs., but I have been using it off and on since about 11 pm last night and all morning doing inventory and sales with excel and it currently has almost 4 hours left. I have it set up for power savings rather than performance since I'm just putting numbers in a spreadsheet.

To the Windows Pro Tablet Users: Got more questions on battery cycle times. How many operating hours use do you get out of the battery charge? When you use battery saving settings does the back feel a lot cooler than when you are running at other levels? Do you have an app like Battery Guru which gives you watts, voltage and temperature. What kind of readings do you get? Also if is running hot are you concerned about battery life? Not trying to make this a microsoft forum but to ask questions relevant in comparison to the BB Playbook tablet.

Here in the UK (note not USA!!) my BB is three times slower than an i pad when starting up. Something requires to be done to fix this slow star-tup speed.

I get up in the morning, press the Playbook power button, go to the kitchen and get some coffee, and when I return, my Playbook is ready to go. I suppose if I had some horrible emergency that could only be solved on my Playbook I might be a little stressed by the 2-3 minute boot time. For general, non-emergency use, doesn't bother me in the slightest...but that's just me...
