mpeg's and avi's are not showing on my PB.
I have done a bit of searching etc of the forums and haven't seen anything of any real help yet.
I'm talking about certain files I have sent over to my PB via the USB Cable from my Laptop. One movie of the 5 is showing up. I'm guessing avi and mpeg is not supported by the playbook?
Does anyone know of a freeware file converter and to what type of file I should be converting to?

Well, Avi is a container format. Within, you can have numerous codecs that are used for compression. So, the main point isn't what extension your file has, but what type of encoding (codec) has been used for its compression.
Thanks to BBthemes and others, you'll find probably all you need here : http://forums.crackberry.com/blackbe...codecs-601213/ to identify them.
Then, using any classic converter (I personally use AVS4YOU), it'll be quite easy to get the best from your PB !

See page 2 of this thread. There have been other threads on the issue. As I mention in those threads, I believe that the pb does not update some index/pointer/housekeeping and loses track of new videos. Extension, size, name do not matter. Usually, the video app will show them all but FileManagers do not

I got Files & Folders, when I try to open filename.mpg or filename.avi through F&F I get a prompt from the video player saying " Media Error This file type isn't supported"
of the 4 vids I have three are for work and don't physically work and the one that does is a full motion picture
Have you tried opening those files directly from the video app?
You can google and find gspot (safe) which identifies the nature of video files, including the video and audio components and report back and someone can say whether the formats are supported.
The files that won't work don't show in the videoapp. They show in the Files & Folders directory but will not open as previously mentioned.

one question - did you download directly to the pb? does the file have an extension like mp4 or avi or....
usually the video file should show up in the video app but then not play if the format is bad.
how large are the files?
In the top-right corner of your screenshot you can see the video codec identifier (often called FourCC) used inside this .avi file. The FourCC in this case is CRAM, which means Microsoft Video 1, a very outdated codec from 1992!
The PlayBook does not have a decoder for this codec. You'll need to convert the file in Windows or QuickTime to an encoding that the PlayBook does support.
How does one covert a file inside windows or quicktime?

FS: No I have these files on my lappy and sent them to the PB via USB and Device Manager
Just got a playbook and tried to put some movies on it. The movies transfered fine but when I went to play them on the playbook it said they were an unsupported video file. What I tried to correct this was I used the windows movie maker program to publish the files into WMV instead of AVI. To my joy this worked. It is a little time consuming, took close to an hour to convert but it worked for me and I don't have to try and find a video converter.
