Just wondering if this is a bug, I hooked up my PlayBook to my Mac this morning. I got a notification saying "unable to charge battery with connected source" I have been able to see it charging when connected before. Anyone else experiencing this?

It's been like that since the .840 beta I'm not a fan.

That message is new for me since the last update. The PC/USB charging behavior hasn't changed though. It still charges slowly like it always has.

And this is the truth. But slowly is the important factor here.

Most PC's USB ports default to 100 mA of current with a maximum output of 500 mA (2.5 Watts). Even with the brightness all the way to a minimum my PB can consume more than 2.5 watts depending on what is running at the time. If the PC's (Mac included) USB port does not shift up from 100 mA (0.5 watts) then there is not enough power being provided to run or charge the PB. On my laptop I have 2 low power and 2 high power ports. I have always had charging issues with the low power ports. It was only with the latest beta and subsequent 2.1 release that the PB now notifies when this issue occurs. It also occurs on low power (< 500 mA) AC adapters. This is better than waking up in the morning to a dead PB.

farside33 is right: there isn't enough voltage going through most USBs (Mac OR PC) to provide enough power to charge the PB properly.

One solution is to buy what would be referred to as a "Y" cable, Two USBs on one end, with one micro on the other. You use two USB ports, receiving enough power to charge and being able to transfer data to the PB.

Otherwise, I do believe nothing has changed in terms of charging (extremely slow), except now we get a notification. :P
