I was reading an ebook on kindle when suddenly it crashes and when the screen comes back, I see a thin black line across the screen. I didn't drop the PB or anything, it just came up on its own.

I did several resets but it's still there. Is the screen damaged? What do I do?

That certainly does seem like a screen issue. Try rotating your device 90 degrees and see if it stays in place. Another test would be to do a screenshot and see if it shows in the resulting image.

    How old?

The PB has a one year warranty to the original purchaser (longer in some jurisdictions). It also has 90 free Tech support. I do not know how Rim deals with "quasi-tech support v. warranty"

I don't think it's still under warranty, but I'll try the screen shot when I get home.

I'm still confused as to how an app crashing caused this

Took a screen shot and the line didn't show up. What now (besides calling customer support)?

Did you rotate the screen? Does the "line" change orientation?

Coincidence that the line and imposition happened so close together?

This very well could ( a broken screen. Did you rotate the device?

You said you did a "reset". Was that from the restart selection when tapping the battery icon? You might try the "hard reset", which will reset hardware. You won't lose any data.

Tried everything, still there. I guess it really is a screen problem. What I don't get is what could have caused it

Hard to say what causes dead pixels. I just sent back a new Nexus 7-2 with a line of dead pixels. I've also had a HDTV do it.

More likely the pixel line blowing caused the kindle app crash, not the crash causing the pixel blow. These microscopic circuits do burn out occasionally. Somewhere someone has to fix a metal conductor to a bit of glass with crystal soup in, and it's a wonder so many last years with no problems.
