I understand that the playbooks bootloader is tight. But if you where to delete every thing on the play books hard drive including the bootloader somehow. Couldn't you install android. Couldn't you redo the boot loader. On the basic level it's just a computer. And any computer can have anything installed no matter how locked they are. Opinions?

Yes it's pretty much same hardware....

That said the "somehow" deleting the bootloader has been tried and tried. It's a security feature, and other than an early version that a vulnerability was found in, no one has been able to defeat the security (that we know of) on the bootloader since those early days.

It's over 6 years old. Why would anyone care? A new $50 tablet would blow the doors off it.

the BlackBerry playbook has better screens then 50 Dollar tablets. the screen also ain't plastic. It's also thinner then 50 Dollar tablets. And made out of premium matirels. plus it's camera is way better then 50 Dollar tablets. And I believe it's gpu is also a bit faster then 50 Dollar tablets.

the BlackBerry playbook was highly specced tablet back in 2011. It still holds up to some devices today.

Sadly, current $50 tablets would be much more functional and useful than a 6 year old, EOL Playbook.

My example was under $50. Go to $60 and you can get a refurb Tab 4.

BlackBerry is very proud of their secure bootloader. It seems very unlikely anyone could bypass it.

Enjoy the PlayBook for what it does well, which is audio/video. I download media (primarily MOOC lectures and podcasts) to it for my two hour daily transit commute, and it's awesome.

If you want a general purpose tablet, move along.

Agreed that the video quality of the PlayBook Is much better than the Amazon Fire. Really no comparison at all other than the pixel resolution.

Just don't ask it to run modern apps, and enjoy it.

The question is, would it boot if you did, or does it have the same HW root of trust as BlackBerry phones? I honestly don't know.

There was that crazy duck guy from years ago who tried to do some sort of hardware override.

If there was a true way to root, we would've heard about it by now.

Someone already has, they just haven't shared it here because it's a 6-year-old tablet that mostly no one cares about, it's not an easy process, and BlackBerry was incredibly rude to them in the past lol.

Maybe mostly, but some of us care. My 32gb 4G LTE + my 64gb are of more use to me now than when they came out. When I use the 4G LTE with AC power from the Rapid Charger + my 50 meg. internet from Bell Sympatico, because of the 50% faster processor mine flies even with the stock browser. I love the cameras, speakers, multi-tasking, screen, bluetooth KB, speaker. There is nothing that I want to accomplish on a tablet that my PB's can't perform. My 32gb even boots up in 1.25 minutes + for as cheaply as you can get them, there is no better value.

It's all about expectations and use cases. Totally agree it's a helluva value for lots of useful functions. I recently won a brand new 128GB iPad in a contest, but it sits on my desk at home, because the iOS apps are no better for watching videos, listen to music, and reading PDFs, which is what I carry a tablet for.

I'm not saying that the PlayBook Is "better than the new iPad, but it is the device I prefer to use for my daily 3-4 hours of transit and in-between time.

the playbook has no music store anymore no streaming services besides deezer which seems to loose support soon. no social media apps besides Facebook and Facebook doesn't load images for me atleast. and crashes when you try to send pms to others. if it got Android it would have access to all the apps from Google play. It would be very useful again.
