    Hi All
I just read this post in the Edmonton Journal and it appears that tablets are taking the place of laptop computers on many campuses across Canada.
You can read the article here: More tablets showing up on campus

You know...question is why is this even an article or even news. Anyone with half a brain
could see that Tablets would replace laptops and be adopted by student more easily due
to increasing usage, size/weight, availability, and computing power. What I don't get is Thor bascially saying Tablets would be history someday (paraphasing)

I admit I like the tablet for portability and media use and throwing out emails but I will always need a laptop/PC because relatively speaking a tablet cannot replace them in entirety

Thor said that there is no future for tablets. That should be good enough for all here.

It's a vision thing, I concur with Thor since I got my BB10, tablet is now my toddler's plaything.
BB10 with dumb screen = future.
or Samsung with dumb screens etc...
Miracast or whatever tech 5 years from now.

I hope you and Thor are wrong. Whenever I hear about dumb screens, I cringe. Then again, I cringed when tablets first came out and I like them now, so you never know.

Moving forward, I think I will do what njblackberry's kids do -- have a laptop and tablet, or a Windows based tablet that can serve as both.

What do most people do with their pc or laptop? Surf, email, IM, play games, social networking. A tablet is easier to take along, handle etc.

I can see tablets completely replacing pc and laptops for avg. people.

A local school district is giving all 3,000 students and the teachers iPads for this upcoming school year. I think the elemantary kids get iPad Mini's and everyone else gets iPads. I think that is the near future for tablets.

I agree. In my area of the UK most of the junior schools loan pupils tablets during the last two years of education. The only expense to the parents is a minor amount to cover the insurance of the tablet to cover loss or damage while at the pupils home. When they move on to senior school a similar policy is adopted for the pupils from their start at the school. When they move on to college they are offered an iPad at cost which can be paid for in installments, as all homework and course work is being prepared for the ipad.

Now given the amount of pupils and students (potential future customers) this involves just in my area in the UK, I am surprised at Thor making such a fool of himself saying tablets will become extinct in 5 years. Given the length of time a pupil spends at senior school (5 years) it would seem a strange comment to make.

Then again perhaps Thor doesnt know about the UK or where it is but from a few simple key strokes on a calculator tells me that the number of pb's that would have been shipped in the next five years would be to say the least, considerable!!!!!!!!!!

Shame Thor doesn't know about the UK?

That's the only possibility. And he does say foolish things.

Perhaps he might have thought of doing a deal with the UK Department of Education like Apple have done? I think that might have resurrected the pb image and provided a few coins into the bank? Ah well!

I can't use tablets for large spreadsheets unless it's a surface tablet. I like a keyboard as well. If I get a blue tooth keyboard then what's the point. I prefer the combination of a laptop and a smartphone. My Dell and Z10 work well together. For the record I work at a University and I see lots of tablets and laptops but more laptops in the hands of folks who do more than surfing and emailing. I do prefer a tablet when I travel though. My PlayBook replaces my laptop in those instances.

The Acer Iconia 8" Windows Tablet had it's drawbacks but did run Windows 8 and many desktop windows programs. But it is already thought to be being replaced with a newer model with much better processor and display. The Microsoft Surface Pro is called a tablet but with the keyboard is really a small laptop. It is a little heavy to be carrying around and runs pretty hot with fairly short battery life. The next iteration coming soon should be much improved with more energy efficient processor. So look to the future and don't make the big investment right now if you can put it off for a few months. Right now with the HDMI and Bluetooth capabilities of tablets you can easily connect them to larger screen monitors or TVs and use Bluetooth keyboards and mouses or with some tablets wired in devices.

Tablets are too limited for serious work and realistically, most of the apps are substandard. Some nuggets stand out but the overwhelming popularity of the tablet relates to its portability, light weight and efficiency of usage (depending on OS).
