An advertisement emailed to me yesterday pointed me in the direction of the online Staples Technology Trade-in program. Out of curiosity, I went into the site to see what they were paying for used PlayBooks and other tablets. Payment is in the form of a Staples gift card, not cash. The results below are for units in good condition, meaning that it is “fully functional, including all screens, buttons and ports.” The unit must also include the charger. Otherwise, a replacement fee will be deducted. The tablets I checked are for wifi-only models.

    PlayBook 16 GB: $10.80
    32 GB: $15.30
    64 GB: $18.90

    Kindle Fire HD 8.9" 16 GB: $45.90

iPad first generation 16 GB: $41.25
    32 GB: $41.25
    64 GB: $48.75

    iPad2 16 GB: $99.00
    32 GB: $82.50
    64 GB: $82.50

The site is operated by uSell. I know Best Buy and others also have trade-in programs but I do not know if uSell operates those.

I double checked so there are no typos here. I know some of the figures will make one wonder if mistakes were made. If there were mistakes, they were not from my end but the site because I ran the inputs again when I saw the apparently odd figures such as a 16 GB iPad 2 being worth more to Staples than the 32 or 64 GB models.

I have absolutely no idea how much of a mark-up occurs by the time these units end up for sale online as refurbished units. If I estimate it as up to four times the price the unit was sold to the trade-in program, then presumably a refurbished PlayBook would sell as follows -

    16 GB $43.20
    32 GB $61.20
    64 GB $75.60

These estimates may actually be somewhat inflated because the program does not pay cash so the value it pays should be discounted.

    What does all this mean?

Just that I have too much time on my hands this weekend!

And maybe help us gauge the fair market value of a used, refurbished and new PlayBook.

For what they are paying, I'd keep mine.

Yes it's a BlackBerry. If you have something bad to say... speak to Easton!

I would rather give mine away as a free gift to someone rather than get this paltry amount for my 32g PlayBook so that they could then make a profit out of my loss if I was ever inclined to do such a thing. Sheesh!

    Careful! Z10 in action!

Staples isn't the only one to offer paltry tradeins. Agree wouldn't take this miserable amount because it would haunt me.Rather wipe it and give to kid or school.

Come on, be fair. The iPad2 is fully supported and will receive iOS8. The Playbook is end of support, almost no good apps, Android support broken and ****ty browser.

I will keep my two Playbooks but only as web radio and I will continue dreaming of having BlackBerry 10 on it.

Trade ins are pretty bad in general no matter the device.

Yes but a first gen iPad even gets more.

All things considered, you'd probably be able to get more if you sold it online.

Tradeins are only good for the seller particularly when the tradein price is such a small fraction of the item traded for.

The PlayBook was really so much lost potential. I think that's what really upsets the community.

That's ridiculous. The playbook is old but it is still very useful and can do many awesome things.

    13 bucks is nothing.

Staples has a deal with Apple so that they need to show a decent price for iPad tradeins even the EOL iPad 1. There certainly is enough margin if traded against the new models. Also there does seem to be a market for refurbished iPads even the first. Name counts.

I keep my playbook on its charging stand just to get a beep when email arrives. 15 bucks is generous.
