There are some brand new PlayBook 4G LTE models unlocked for sale on eBay. Seller claims New/other. For the die hard BlackBerry collectors such as myself, I'd jump on it right away to upgrade from the Wi-Fi only model.

Nor will ship to UK either. Not that they are any use in Europe. Without a SIM from one of the US or Canadian partner providers it will not get any updates. Unlocked = unsupported.

Buy a Rogers SIM on eBay. Even without service it will update over WiFi as long as the Rogers SIM is in.

I am running my unlocked 4G LTE on AT&T. Popped the SIM out of my Z10 and it updated to 2.1.0.1282 instantly. It even added the AT&T store. Keep in mind AT&T was going to carry it but backed out.

For those who don't think it's worth the upgrade, I beg to differ. The performance bump and LTE are amazing!

Also, for some reason the LTE version allows you to install a few BlackBerry 10 apps provided you have a BlackBerry 10 phone and have already downloaded them. Running Fred was a real shocker, but it worked. Technically, the specs of the LTE PlayBook are darn close to the STL100-1 Z10 minus 1GB of RAM.

I can vouch for the seller: he was very understanding and patient while I attained an AT&T SIM for mine and offered support the whole time.

I'm typing this post using my LTE PlayBook.
And forget about using one on VzW: they won't allow it on their WWAN.

Two quick questions, will the 4g playbook work on T-Mobile bands at 4g speeds? How about using verizons 4glte simple cards. Very interested how the performance is compared to the wifi only model.

The WiFi only model is slow compared to the 4G LTE model to say the least. CrackBerry did comparison videos, but there are more differences in performance that I noticed when using both. I don't know what frequency T Mobile uses to get 4G, but the 4G LTE PlayBook is 700mhz if that helps (it's EXACTLY what AT&T uses). Verizon is probably a no-go since their SIM service is different than a GSM network but don't quote me on that.

Must you have a SIM to get the latest software download? Can you just use wifi or Desktop?

I'd like one for the processor but have zero interest in LTE.

Verizon will shut you down as soon as they know it's a PlayBook and they will know as soon as you give them the IMEI of the device.

When I got the PlayBook from the seller it had 2 desktop icons: the browser and setup. I tried using the setup to attch to my WiFi network which I was successful in doing but when the update utility reached out for updates it returned the false message indicating that my software was the current version.
I was sweating it right up until I received my AT&T SIM (specify the small size SIM BTW) but once it was in the next update attempt succeeded without further adieu and all the usual icons populated the desktop.

That's because LTE PlayBooks have a different OS update and must have a SIM installed (even if inactive) to confirm the correct software is installed.

Makes sense that the two different models have different OS. Makes no sense (to me) that I can't update the LTE via Wifi or Desktop, without activating LTE. I would want one just for the processor.

Can I borrow someone's AT&T SIM and then do update via Wifi (not their data allowance)?

What "inactive" SIM would work? Can I use an old, inactive SIM from the UK?

You DO NOT need to activate the SIM. Just need to have a compatible one in there. Try what you have, but I can vouch only for Bell, Telus, Rogers, AT&T SIM cards.

Yes you can borrow anyone s Micro SIM, active or not, on AT&T. The update performs over WiFi first. It actually recommends WiFi.

What's a reasonable amount to ask for one of these? I have an unlocked 32gb lte straight from bb. Used it once then put it in a cupboard. Never thought of selling it because I figured they weren't worth enough.

So with box and all accessories, factory unlocked, rapid charger and a snazzy case with bluetooth keyboard...?
Might have to throw it up on the marketplace.
