Is it possible to use the Playbook to do online banking (HTTPS)?

Yes, I use the BlackBerry PlayBook for many secure websites including my own website which uses a certificate. There will be a padlock icon under the address bar and the URL will begin with https://. But you could have discovered this for yourself before logging into the online banking portal of your financial institution.

I could have discovered it if I actually owned a Playbook. I'm thinking of buying one which is why I asked the question.

This is such an inane question. Of course the PB browser supports SSL/HTTPS - *all* modern browsers do, and the PB's has been demonstrated to be more compliant with the range of web standards than virtually any other mobile browser.

    Reeks of troll bait...

Not sure why everyone yells "troll" all the time. People complain when users don't do research before buying a Playbook or BlackBerry, now users are complaining when they do? Give it a rest its a simple question with a simple answer.

Yes the PB supports a wide range of https sites, and its very likely your bank's site will be fine. Only way to know for sure is to actually try it, but its a very safe bet you'll be fine.

On a side note: whenever you are on a public wifi network, you should never log in to sites that only use http, but always use https.

Major sites such as Google, Facebook, Twitter either do that automatically or have a setting that requires all logins to use https.

If you use only http, it is trivial for other users on the public wifi network (or the administrator, or the guy living next door or parked outside) to listen in and capture your Google/Facebook/Twitter/whatever login credentials. That can even be done automatically using a phone.

I would NEVER log into something like a banking site on a public WIFI, regardless of using HTTPS. Information can still be gleaned very easily.

I would use the PlayBook in preference to anything else at this point. No real risk of keyloggers, viruses or other malware, for one thing.

I'm not sure I understand the rationale for avoiding use of public WiFi when one is using an HTTPS site. The encryption is done in the device before it ever gets out to the WiFi world. Even if you believe someone is trying to intercept your communications I don't see how that noticeably increases your risk when compared to using a wired connection, where the same encrypted data can be "seen" by any number of people working at any number of organizations (ISPs etc) between you and the bank.

Thanks for all the helpful replies. No, I'm not a troll. I'm someone who's thinking of investing in a Blackberry and a Playbook to replace an Android phone and a netbook. As I know nothing at all about either Blackberries or Playbooks I came here looking for some help from people who are more knowledgeable than me. As I said, thanks to all the folks that helped. The rest of you - meh!

    Glad you brought this up!

My PlayBook will NOT load the full OR mobile site of Bank Of America!

Why is this? I still do my banking in my 9650 because it just doesn't work in the Playbook.

I'm doing fine with Apple Bank, BNY Mellon, Wells Fargo, and USAA Bank on my PB. While there are no specific apps available like the ones I have on the iPad and iPhone, the PB does exceptionally well on their full web sites, and I can make deposits, transfers, etc. with no fear of any security breaches.

Bridged I assume? It load sometimes, very slowly. Most times I get just text in a Site map format. The mobile site loads but after I log in it goes nowhere.
