Unless I'm completely misremembering, conversations are threaded. They certainly are on the PlayBook, and should definitely be threaded in BB10.
I think only Symbian still has no threading.

What you're referring to is called "threaded" messages. To answer your question, yes, Blackberry has done this with SMS since OS5.
About your original post: don't be too surprised if RIM turns BB10 into somewhat of a walled garden as well. Right now side loading on Playbook is made possible by turning on developer mode, but there's no guarantee that this will remain in BB10. If RIM wants to woo developers, promising anti-piracy measures (such as the walled garden) would be a good idea.
