Hi guys, I'm starting a rumor as that the blackberry playbook will stop working for everyone January 18th, 2038 at exactly 10:14:08 PM. This is because if you change your time on your playbook to any time after this you'll get "error 48" "Unable to start blackberry runtime" This is because they set the time for any playbook (obviously if it's still working by then) to stop working at that exact time. I spent like an hour finding the exact time and there you have it.

Try it for yourselves (i cant guarantee the same time but I'll post a video of it)

Most Unix-based systems have the same "end date".

    Per Wikipedia:
Because most 32-bit Unix-like systems store and manipulate time in this format, it is usually called Unix time, and so the year 2038 problem is often referred to as the Unix Millennium Bug.

I think in technology years the playbook will probably be about 100+ yrs old.....

$10 bucks in 2038 we'll still be on this forum wondering when will BB10 will be released on the Playbook!!

You'll see comments like 'If Blackberry cares about us at all they'll give us BB10 NOW!!!'

    or

'Why can't I get Netflix?? Surely we'll get it when they upgrade us....'

    Or

'That's it! I'm done with Blackberry!! Palm just released a new tablet/phone/waffle iron that Kicks ***!! - BUH BYE BB!'

I think there wont be any replacement battery for the PlayBook and with the constant degrading of the Li-Ion battery, this will be a problem. but at least it's a problem for the future to solve

Of course, aside from this being useless information, this is a non-issue, in that it's a problem that we don't have to deal with....yet. It was only a few years ago when unix time reached 1,000,000,000 seconds (you work it out, from 1 January 1970, second 'zero') and as another pointed out, the counter allocated to this value is 32-bits wide.

But honestly...years ago, I had an AT&T PC6300, which had a real-time clock which, regretably, was shortchanged on bitcount and managed to outlive its maximum value. The solution was simple...just a code patch on the clock driver, to offset the rolled-over time, to display the correct date again. And as another poster here essentially said, if we're all still using the same PlayBooks we're using now, then obviously we've somehow come to the end of civilization, and must be charging our antique electronic ephemera with bycycle-powered chargers and the occasional solar cell units.

As the Playbook has a battery that should cycle at 500 charges I expect about 5 ( 8 charges a month ) years before the battery is shot... unless of course you charge it one a month through 2038....

I knew a lot of PlayBook that already stop working... but unlike the "rumor's date" fatal error, these PlayBooks can still be revived when BB10 comes to PlayBook... according to their owners...
