That's the news from the National Post's live blog on RIM's quarterly results.

Also interesting, Mr. Basillie has resigned from RIM's board of directors.

Thats actually good for them since they lose money on every one sold, maybe next quarter they can get that down to 250,000

THAT statement would be true if they only sold 16G units........

hard to say, the initial run was suppose to be 1.5 million. its unknown if they had more produced. Maybe report build dates on boxes in dec BUT its assumed that just means the date it was boxed, not that it was built on that date

I purchased mine in Feb and the date on the box is 081211. Since this was boxed over seas I'm assuming that that means Dec. 8, 2011. But like you said that could just mean it was boxed on that date not built on that date.

Does this mean we can reassess the news that Apple /shipped/ more iPhones to Canada than RIM /shipped/ Blackberry's? That news article says /shipped/ too... Maybe RIM isn't in trouble in Canada, at least with regards to Apple?

That includes those sold to resellers. So the actual number in user's hands is something less than that, but probably not much less since I doubt many retailers are stocking the product in large numbers now.

(Update 4:49 p.m. — RIM’s earnings per share was in line with expectations a 81 US though the company fell very short of revenue expectations of US$4.57-billion, reporting just US$4.19-billion in Q4 revenue. Quarterly smartphone shipments of 11.1 million also fell short of expectations of 11.2-million though PlayBook tablet sales of more than 500,000 were vastly ahead of even the more bullish analyst expectations of about 350,000)

    So does "sales" mean shipped?

No, there is no confusion here that I can see. They shipped 500k this quarter, 1.3 million total Playbooks shipped to date since it was introduced.

Of that 1.3 million to date, about 1 million have been sold to end users.
