So how many of those are still sitting in warehouses?
hard to say, the initial run was suppose to be 1.5 million. its unknown if they had more produced. Maybe report build dates on boxes in dec BUT its assumed that just means the date it was boxed, not that it was built on that date

I purchased mine in Feb and the date on the box is 081211. Since this was boxed over seas I'm assuming that that means Dec. 8, 2011. But like you said that could just mean it was boxed on that date not built on that date.
Thread title is misleading...they SHIPPED 500k. RIM continues to slide downwards...next qtr. is going to be worse. Goodness.
Does this mean we can reassess the news that Apple /shipped/ more iPhones to Canada than RIM /shipped/ Blackberry's? That news article says /shipped/ too... Maybe RIM isn't in trouble in Canada, at least with regards to Apple?
How does one know how many were actually sold? The info in the link says sold.
That includes those sold to resellers. So the actual number in user's hands is something less than that, but probably not much less since I doubt many retailers are stocking the product in large numbers now.

(Update 4:49 p.m. — RIM’s earnings per share was in line with expectations a 81 US though the company fell very short of revenue expectations of US$4.57-billion, reporting just US$4.19-billion in Q4 revenue. Quarterly smartphone shipments of 11.1 million also fell short of expectations of 11.2-million though PlayBook tablet sales of more than 500,000 were vastly ahead of even the more bullish analyst expectations of about 350,000)

I just received my free 16gb PlayBook for making and submitting an app to AppWorld and it has a Jan 10, 2012 box date (100112) S/N 134507xxxxxx

So does "sales" mean shipped?
The press release says "shipped"
"During the quarter, RIM shipped approximately 11.1 million BlackBerry smartphones and over 500,000 BlackBerry PlayBook tablets."
