Here is an interesting article. I bet the trend will continue just like Android and Apple. This is a big deal to RIM if they want to maintain that top ranking of security.

There has been word for the past few days that Research In Motion’s PlayBook has been jailbroken. What this means is that, for the first time ever in RIM’s history, root access has been gained into a BlackBerry operating system. Why is this a big deal? Well, of RIM’s few remaining strengths, one of them was security, both in terms of encrypting and securing the messages you send over the RIM network, and device security. It’s why BlackBerry products became so popular with enterprises and governments — security. That device is so secure, that even the President of the United States uses one. Read on for more.

RIM’s new operating system, however, is a different beast. It’s more powerful and it is certainly capable, but it also looks like it’s been hacked, broken into, and manipulated by a few individuals who have demonstrated that they have access to something that no one outside of RIM has ever had access to.

Guess what operating system RIM’s BlackBerry smartphones are going to run? The same one that was jailbroken, opening up the possibility that forthcoming smartphones and tablets from Research In Motion will be subject to the same cat and mouse game that jailbreakers play with Apple. This means that the security of a BlackBerry will not ever be the same as long as someone out there is able to exploit a vulnerability in RIM’s BBX operating system, and as far as I know, apps aren’t sandboxed at all like they are on iOS. Not all apps are encrypted (aside from what, Password Keeper?), so once you root the device, you have access to all of the data on that BlackBerry product — a concept that enterprise and government BlackBerry clients will not be happy about. In fact, I’d venture on to say that this is probably the biggest threat to RIM right now if this turns out to be true. For RIM’s enterprise and government customers to be thinking about the fact that the upcoming phones and devices could be unsecure, is a big, big deal.

Research In Motion's new OS isn't secure anymore thanks to a jailbreak

Actually, this is old news; numerous sites and publications have alluded to this weeks ago and RIM is staying on top of this. RIM - 1 Dweebs - 0

Actually, depending on your point of view, either the news still hasn't come out, or it came out a good six days ago (https://twitter.com/#!/cmwdotme/stat...76944569384961).

The reason I don't think the news has really come out, and get bothered by sites like BGR crowing "isn't secure any more!", is because we still don't know how they've actually accomplished this. If it requires that you enable Developer Mode first, then -- for now -- the OS is still pretty secure by most standards.

The video is a few days old and the RIM's response was posted yesterday. Anyway, it will be interesting to see where this goes.

    OP,
There are some questions about this and the full story will be revealed over the next few days. However, I would not condemn a phone that has not even been released yet to being non-secure just yet.
The Playbook is turning out to be a great test bed for the next generation BBX devices. Hopefully when they launch they will be super solid and secure.
The BlackBerry phones are the most secure in the world. Regardless of what you read from turkeys, the President of of U.S., most intelligence service and others concerned about security use them.

The Playbook is taking a lot of punishment from all sources but hopefully it will just help RIM make an even better BBX phone.

I find it interesting how many apple fans (and I assume you are one from your manly logo) just relish the thought of RIM failing on security. Just can't wait to dump dirt on them.

RIM is the most secure and reliable communications device. However, it does not come with a a virtual assistant that makes decision and thinks for you. So, if you want to relinquish whatever is left of individual reason and logic to apple you are in the right place.
Should I bring an umbrella to S.F? For Pete's sake, just give me the weather. I can still think for myself. That is why I have a BlackBerry Bold 9930 and not some hyped up pretty phone.

The Bold 9930 and other OS7 devices are the most secure devices out there today. That is just a fact Jack. Regardless of what you would like to believe.

    Go RIMM!
