The ALL CAPS is by Best Buy and RIM, not me. The use of this language should be a red flag to anyone. They don't normally make their legal cover so explicit - the only thing lacking is a blinking display. Quite frankly one might as well buy a used one on ebay since you will have just as much likelihood for success. They are telling potential buyers that these are used products that have not been fully tested to be operational. This really is a classic buyers beware scenario, except it is the merchant that is telling you to beware.
BTW, one of the reasons I suggest caution is that I returned a defective 64 GB Playbook to a Best Buy a couple weeks ago and by the time I got home, the website had added a 64 GB Playbook to the store inventory as an open box item. If it was the one I returned, it was clearly defective, with a vertical pulsating gray line just off the center of the screen. Maybe someone else came in a returned another 64 GB Playbook to the same store at the same time, but that seems beyond coincidence.Last edited by swyost; 01-20-12 at 04:10 PM.
01-20-12 03:56 PMLike 2 - I got a 16GB refurb from Best Buy, and have had it for a couple of weeks now. There were zero cosmetic defects, and so far it has been rock solid for me. No dead pixels or anything like that. They at least do a security wipe on it I think, because when I got mine I had to do the initial setup just like it was straight from the factory.
Obviously you're taking a bit of a risk buying anything that is sold 'as is' though. The way I looked at it before I decided to buy it, was that I had 30 days to take it back if it was messed up, then save a little more to buy a new one. I lucked out though I guess...with shipping it was $184 USD. Good luck if you decide to grab one!01-20-12 04:26 PMLike 0 - I have bought a few refurbs from Apple as well. I suspect some of Apples refurbs are just inventory clearance of new products.
As for the PlayBooks, the "as is" may also mean no technical support from RIM if the PlayBook was ever activated or registered by the original buyer.
I bought a PlayBook from a Rogers store with a line of dead pixels a a good discount because the manager didn't want to go through the hassle of sending it back to RIM. The original owner only had it one day and the PlayBook even had the original sales receipt and return receipt taped to the box. When I called Rim it took a while even to get to talk to somebody because in that one day in April the original purchaser had it, it must have been activated on their system. After a hour or so on the phone, I was able to get an express exchange arranged and a new one shipped by RIM. To get this I had to provide my bill of sale and the proof showing it was only out of the store for a day before being returned. Without this original sales receipt, they may not have done anything for me. I happened to buy it the first day of the $100 Mastercard rebate, so in the end I got it about $300 off.01-20-12 05:57 PMLike 0 - I purchased a refurbished 64 GB Playbook from Amazon Warehouse over the holidays for $300. Pricewise, this deal is even better. The only defects I had were: outer box scuffed up, two tiny dead pixels that aren't noticeable except on boot, and the bulge on the back. Everything otherwise was perfect - new manuals, inner box, power supply, slip case, factory screen protector, ...01-21-12 06:39 AMLike 0
- Most refurbs are items that are just returned because someone changed their mind. Once it is sold and opened, it CANNOT be resold as new.01-21-12 07:40 AMLike 0
