- My feeling is that RIM needs to stop playing catch up, playing "me too" and take the lead - they have huge advantages in the Business and tech world with this platform - starting with the form factor (I can actually put this in my pocket!) then things like Flash support, bridge to BB phone - serious multitasking etc. - gamers, children, facebookers and general entertainment users can go toy with the other pads... especially since all they do is complain, why even be here if they are so unhappy?
Buying Scoreloop ( gaming company ) was yet another stupid move on their part. I say to RIM stick with what got you where you (were)... get down to business!! Most business people and professionals find the ipad too unwieldy and lacking in serious business capabilities.
I think grabbing a larger share of the business pie (or at least saving what they already have) would give them a recovery - then they can play "me too". Business people are their most loyal followers - don't abandon them before they are forced to abandon you!

- I think there should be a good mix of work and play. Whilst I agree that the "professional" aspect of the tab should be brought to the forefront, an enjoyable "time wasting" quality should remain as well. Sometimes a quick game of Plants vs Zombies is needed to distract you from the stress of a hard day.
Also, the terms "work" and "play" are subjective. The mass amount of simple and childish games that keep popping up in App World don't fall within the category of fun for me. When I need to wind down, I sit back with the PlayBook and go through news feeds or browse CrackBerry. Occasionally I watch a movie on Crackle or an episode of South Park. The apps that allow me to do that aren't necessarily "play" apps.
"Work"-wise, the majority of professionals require basic characteristics in their technology. It needs to be fast, it needs to be productive and it needs to make their life simpler. Once Email and PIM and Bridge and Reader and the Office apps are cleaned up, stream-lined and polished you will have your "work" tablet, without sacrificing everyone else's ability to do whatever they consider "play".jimred07 likes this.06-09-11 04:24 PMLike 1 - Not suggesting removing any play capability - just changing their priorities and focus. Buying a gaming company with the dwindling resources is a bad move and shows high priority for "catching up" with other entertainment devices. Aren't there enough play apps even now to satisfy the work wind down? Who needs more - most people in this economy have not time to play - working two jobs or looking for work - unless they are on the RECEIVING end of the new socialism.

06-09-11 04:48 PMLike 0 - I guess I somewhat agree with the OP. I find the "business" or "professional" apps that came with the PB are quite limited. Sheets is almost unuseable. There are no FIND or Search in it or Word. The adobe viewer is so lame it is shocking.
Can't change the font size when viewing email. Can't easily place the cursor when editing email and there is no ZOOM capability. I won't mention the autocorrect or spellchecker since everyone is suppose to know how to spell so they are unnecessary - NOT.
The Browser's book marks are very professionally presented in an endless list and you can't rename or identify what they are.
Even leisure - you can only read kobo books you purchase on the pb - no sideloading.
RIM is asking for a lot of leniency and relying on its goodwill but the constant refrain even after two months is that it is not ready for Prime Time. Oh, yes, there are some really nice aspects but that does not carry a $500 machine that fails, and yes, it does fail, in too many areas.06-09-11 06:25 PMLike 0 - 06-09-11 06:29 PMLike 0
- Last wednesday I brought my PB to a meeting for the first time. I used Docs to go to present 'my part', but when I needed to take a note, even though the PB obviously supports this I still went with the ol' pen and paper
Guess its not only about the merits of the device, but also about 'getting used to a new way of working'.06-09-11 06:51 PMLike 0 - That's why its a poll with a question mark...wasn't sure how popular this thread would be. True no reason at all it cant excel at both, but first things first - serve the business base- a more rigorous way to get out the bugs and we need it sooner than later - entertainment solutions are already out there.06-09-11 09:42 PMLike 0

Right now it's pretty much a toy, but we all know there is a lot more to come.06-09-11 09:47 PMLike 0 -

You are right on.
Why a company would throw away all of their strong points to play catch-up with the flavor of the month is beyond me. Even naming their pad the "playbook" is crazy. I almost purchased one last week, but right now, my small Dell does all I need and more, and not much bigger. I would be embarrassed to tell people I have a "Play" Book anyway. I wonder who approved that marketing naming decision?
Rim doesn't stress their exclusive features like security, quality of hardware, magnetic sleep, charging pod, etc. Even their bluetooth audio gateway is top notch and very nice to have. BTW as for bluetooth, RIM is the only phone I found that reliably connects with a telephone bridge so you can cut your land line.
Me, and my BB associates, only need a phone to do about 4-5 things, really well. They should stick to that. But I admit, we are in our 40's, and don't play have time or interest to play games and watch movies on a phone.
Can you imagine if Rolex started putting digital displays with thermometers, calculators, timers, etc, on their watches to compete with Casio? It would destroy why people buy one in the first place.
So I vote Workbook.07-09-11 02:38 PMLike 0
