I received my Blackberry Playbook (OS VERSION 2.1.01526) last Christmas. The two of us have become inseparable friends.

However, around a week ago I began to notice that the cable wouldn't plug in properly, and even when it was connected, sometimes I would not see the lightning bolt symbol. I'd have to push the cable in a bit or plug it in again in order for it to charge. This happened repeatedly, and I ended up constantly checking to see if it was actually charging.

Eventually, it simply stopped charging altogether and has now used up its remaining life. I tried plugging it into the computer many times (thinking that the cable itself might be the problem), but that doesn't work either. It won't recognize either cable.

I sincerely hope there is a way to fix this without having to send it in for repair. One method I've heard about is holding the power button for twenty or forty seconds, then plugging it in and letting go. I've tried this a number of times and it hasn't helped. Another suggestion I've heard is to buy a rapid charger - something about a magnetic cable that plugs into the port on the right.

    What should I do?

Look into the usb port on the pb. The connector board, somewhat located below center (screen up), should be LEVEL. If it is slanted/bent up/down, then the cable will not fit right or charge. Sometimes I can be gently leveled using NON-conductive toothpick or plastic tools.

You might consider getting the rapid charger.

If its completely dead you will need to stack charge it. There are a few thread on CB as to how to go about it, just search.

I would suggest that you buy the rapid charger before you stack charge, especially if the PB port is suspect.

Plugging into your computer is a waste of time as the USB port does not supply enough juice.

It looks like your micro usb port is damaged, just like mine. I got the rapid travel charger which uses a magnetic port to charge the playbook. It was on sale at radio shack before for 15 bucks.

OR, since that is still in warranty, contact BB support. there is a thread here in the playbook forum regarding sending it to BB for repairs.

The PB has a one year warranty to the original purchaser. It also has 90 free Tech support. I do not know how Rim deals with "quasi-tech support v. warranty"

OP: My advice on this is don't try too hard to make it work. You have a 1 year warranty, and RIM's Return process (RMA) gives frankly exceptional service. Most posts I've read say a shiny new PB drops onto your doormat within the week! (which matches my experience)

If your USB port is a bit chewed-up, and you have a dead PB, then not opting for the warranty repair is a world of pain. Stack charging is an immensely long and frustrating experience in my experience, and isn't certain to work. And your USB port would still be chewed even if you got it going.

Now that you've taken reasonable steps to get the PB to charge, call your local support number in F2's post above and talk them through the problem. If it can't be resolved with the steps they'll talk you through, they'll initiate an RMA (almost certainly) given that your PB is only a couple of months old.

    Good Luck!

P.S. The RMA process is completely FREE if that swings the debate.

Not shiny new PB in my experience. If you look at the return policy it says replacement, not new.

Mine was actually new I believe... which was an amazing outcome as my PB was 14-months old and out of warranty.

    However, you're right.

The RMA wording says a repair or "as-like" replacement and it's up to RIM to decide. I suspect it's easier for RIM to simply grab another PB off the shelf and provide a quick turn-around replacement than repair it. Whether they then refurbish the broken ones or throw them in a skip is something I don't know. Maybe my replacement was actually a refurbished unit, but everything on it was gleaming and was indistinguishable from new... and it cost me nowt!

Back on topic: I'd be very surprised if the replacement for an, under warranty, two-month old PB that won't charge wasn't truely "new", and absolutely astonished if they offered to repair it.

Good result for you. Mine was under 2 months old, sent away as a Same Unit Repair on the RMA. Came back as a replaced unit, they could not repair the HDMI port! 8 recharge counts on Battery Guru. + Replacement one has a bulging back so does not lie flat on desk top, original was OK.

    Not a happy bunny.

Don't use the flimsy charger that came in the box get something else. This is a too very common issues with this he playbook. I use a Samsung USB wall charger and a blackberry USB cable works great.

Thanks for the responses, everyone. I am going the repair route after all.

However, I'm a major dummy when it comes to this stuff. When they talk about return packaging in the RMA e-mail, do they mean that they're sending something to me before I send them the PB? Do I send it to the Waterloo address (95 PHILLIP STREET, WATERLOO, ONTARIO, CANADA N2L 3W8) where RIM headquarters seems to be, or is there another, specific place that I send it for repair?

They will send you a box and pre-addressed label. Unless something has changed, it will be shipped to USA - Tennessee for North America. Let's hope that they find the usb port issue was not user-caused.
