Hi there, does anyone know how the wifi is across northern Spain along the Camino de Santiago walk? Would it be worthwhile to take the playbook (every ounce counts!!) to be able to use the video chat capability with family playbooks back in Canada? We will also be touring France and Italy after the walk and are aware of adapter issues and some hotspot areas for wifi in Europe (free at McDonalds and Starbucks, for example). We have read the April 25, 2012 thread. Any other tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

    I just watched this:

I don't get the impression that there are too many WiFi hotspots there

Hi. I'm from Ponferrada, Spain, at the very "Camino de Santiago".

    You will be very welcome.

I won't say you will go plenty of hotspots, nor your playbook will be complety useless. While time goes by wifi access it's been seen like a service to give. So decission is yours, but I would carry my playbook with me despite really every ounce counts.

    Best regards.

Many thanks for the reply! It sounds like there are places in towns on the walk that have wifi. Do you know if it is common in Spain to have free wifi or do you have to pay for it everywhere you go?

Hostals, hotels and other public places use to have free wifi.

More and more cafes in Spain are offering free wi-fi (usually after you purchase something - usually as little as a single coffee or a water). I've never been on the Camino de Santiago walk, but I have been well off the tourist trail in N Spain, and have often been pleasantly surprised by how easy it is to get a wi-fi connection (warning: some of these connections are not the fastest, so you may have issues if you want to use skype, video chat, etc - but will be good enough to download your emails)

    Have a great trip

    All the best

I recently took my Playbook on the Camino Aragonese and a portion of the Camino Frances and found wifi available in most places, even in some of the albergues.
