I did look around the forums before posting this, but none of the other solutions I saw mentioned seemed to work.

My Playbook hasn't been charging for a few weeks now. I've just been putting off dealing with it since I've been busy.

    I have done the following:
    1. Allowed it to drain completely.
    2. Restarted it while plugged in numerous times.
    3. Tried "Stack Charging" which apparently involves plugging in for 2 min, unplugging for 10 seconds, rinsing, and repeating.
    4. Leaving it plugged in for a long time.
    5. Updating the software, but this isn't possible while it's under 20%

None of this has managed to get up to 1% on the charge. I don't have Battery Guru, is that free? I have a free battery app that doesn't work that well.

    Suggestions appreciated

Do you get the charging sign on. If no then you have loose connection to device and try to push the plug in and see if the sign appears.

I'm not sure honestly -- the Battery App I have says "charging" and I've tried 4 different chargers, so I don't think that's it...

...but on the other hand, isn't there supposed to be a lightning bolt looking thing on the battery? I don't see that. I just tried wiggling it around and that's not working.

If it wasn't connected though why does it have power to turn on / be used while plugged in?

    Warranty?

The PB has a one year warranty to the original purchaser. It also has 90 free Tech support. I do not know how Rim deals with "quasi-tech support v. warranty"

I have the same problem -it appears that the tiny little power line connection is not engaging
Called BB and was told the USB connection not covered by warranty (6 moths old machine] and i will have to pay to get if fixed - nearly as much as a new machine BTW

Battery Guru costs $1.99 and is worth the price. If you need to use free you can get Android ports frm app world such as Battery Booster and Battery Watch. Inspect the USB port carefully it maybe damaged . The tab in the center may not be in the correct position. See other posts on this point. The Blackberry Knowledge Base article on charging is KB27705.

Blargh. Got this in March 2012 so it's been over a year anyway.

Any idea what could have caused this?

Would Battery Guru still be worth picking up? This is frustrating. I like my little tablet.

Battery Guru would not help if you have a damaged USB port. You could however get a Rapid Travel charger or dock. Both of these use the magnetic charging port. It is possible to use the PB without charging through the USB port or connecting the device to a computer using the USB port. You must be able to download updates by wifi and you can save documents and pictures in Box, Dropbox or one of the other cloud services.

Plugging chargers in the wrong way can easily damage the USB port on the Playbook.

Fantastic, that might be the easiest solution.

The USB port works fine still except it doesn't charge. I can xfer files and everything (and use the playbook while it's plugged in) no problem.

Which again... I mean, clearly it's providing some power via USB, otherwise it wouldn't turn on?

As suggested look into the usb port. If the connector board is not level (it is closer to the bottom (screen up)) but bent or slanted, it might not be making good contact. GENTLY with toothpick (non-conducting tool) see if it can be leveled. The port is designed so that an up-side-down plug can be accidently inserted and bend the connector board. It is designed to accommodate a usb-on-the-go cable which is more rectangular.

The Playbook charger cable has the data lines shorted together. A USB cable that you use to transfer data is not what is used with the charger. If you can still transfer data it would seem to be that the USB port may be OK. It puzzles me that the BB tech support would decide that a damaged port was the problem but maybe the right questions were not asked, Unless you pursue the matter you may not get beyond the first, less knowedgable level of tech support. In any event the chargers using the magnetic charging ports are a very good investments. When you say plugged in do you mean to the computer? Some power may be transferred using the plug in to the computer but the Playbook restricts this to 384 milliamps according to KB27705 which is less than the 900 milliamps required for operation at the six hour level. Thus the message: Unable to charge with connected source. You can slowly charge if you can put the PB in standby.

Another question: Does your battery app still show 1% charge and what voltage does it show? What is the name of the app? I would like to see what it does on my unit. Here is what Battery Watch shows.

First of all, thanks everyone for the awesome helpful comments! I've got several new things to try now (from getting a new charger, to playing with a toothpick, and so on). I really appreciate this.

I have Battery Watch -- it says 0% and doesn't change, though it also says it's charging (when it's not).

I had the exact same problem. Data was fine, thus not a port issue. Because data worked and charging did not, BlackBerry support replaced my unit (under warranty) without much fuss.

If you can still connect to PC there is nothing wrong with the port.Call BB again and emphasize that you can still connect to PC.I had the same issue with one of mine and it was a bad battery pack. This is definitely covered under warranty.Be insistant.Don't let them weasel out of fixing it.
