did you hold down the power on button till the red light came on? Then it will go black again for awhile. Then the Blackberry logo will come on and it takes a few for it to get to your home screen.
It can be a little tricky turning on the PB. I use a pen and hold down the power button till I see the red light come on. Than let it go and wait about 10 seconds and you should see the PB logo. Let us know if you still need help.
I am glad you have your PB up and running again. Welcome to the wonderfull world of the PB. If you have any questions ask. Also I would recommend looking through the http://forums.crackberry.com/blackbe...t-know-671764/ link. There is a lot of great advice there.

To REBOOT: Press and HOLD all three keys for about 10 - 20 seconds: PowerOn, VolUp and VolDown. If you hear a shutter type sound, you've taken a Screen Shoot and probably missed the PowerButton.

I used to use a pen too - before that I tried (and failed) to use my fingernail to get to the blasted thing. Then someone in another forum suggested that it works better if you use the fleshy part of your finger rather than the nail. And it works!
