- First I'm sorry if I offended some of the great specialists in the playbook of the forum. That was not the intention. But some are not very smart. If I'm asking about an option to the OS playbook is why I have a playbook and do not want to discard it in the trash and buy another tablet, only porq. Say I do not like wasted resources ....
As a simple User I bought the playbook like a good option for my everyday use. The 7-inch screen for me was crucial in the choice.
The question and I hoped the playbook more than a bigger screen for my blackberry. OK, the browser and the camera are spectacular. But things are missing. Insufficient quality applications, lack a native email, msn a lack, a lack skype dropbox a lack of many things. But in my view what is missing is consideration of the RIM at certain points. How much delay the release of version 2.0 of the tablet OS.
But back to the topic thank those who have struggled to give me a technical answer of what is possible or not. I think the question of security and lack of drivers for Windows would be crucial.
Now if you ask me why I did not buy a tablet running windows. The honest answer is simple: there is not one yet. If you ask me why I did not buy an iPad, because it is too big to be carried around.

Installing a completely different - and stable - OS is essentially not done (except in the occasional cases, such as the HTC HD2)
While it is possible to install a different OS, the hardware support usually has to be rewritten from scratch; making the new OS not fully support all device features and being as optimized as the original OS (exception: Intel GMA 500)
And while the current PlayBook OS has rough edges, it is NOT abandoned; and RIM is committed to improving it and migrating all devices to it's system. So while it currently does not meet your needs; it will. (and don't worry; RIM cancelled/postphoned the PlayBook 2 in order to work on the Superphone, so they will be maintaing this hardware for a while yet.)
Long story short: Installing a different OS is essentially not done (never done on a BB device), and PlayBook os still has promise. If you're not satisfied with your PB then feel free to sell it and buy something different.Willard814 likes this.11-05-11 12:27 PMLike 1 -

Send it to me or someone who can figure out what to use it for if you find it that useless..

Without a proper UI incorporating touch, utility apps, and drivers for the hardware, amongst a zillion other things that make a tab OS useful, what's the point? Why port an OS that is less useful than the native one?
Building up QNX to this level was no simple task.Last edited by blackjack93117; 11-05-11 at 02:01 PM.

Heck, check the Microsoft Store for these mythical Windows tablets that you say don't even exist: Microsoft Store Online - Tablets
And on a final note... for the first time in recorded history (unless I hit my head and simply forgot) I have to agree with BlackJack. What's the point in trying to cram Windows onto the PlayBook? There are plenty of offerings out there and I'm sure, with a little bit of looking, you could find a Windows tablet (or any other OS for that matter) that better suits you. Or get more than one like I (and others) have done.Last edited by ifarlow; 11-05-11 at 02:42 PM.

Even linux for that matter, without building a shell on top of it and hardware drivers?

Besides, I have read several times here that Windows tablets don't exist (regardless of OS), and that makes no sense to me. Windows tablets have been around forever, despite the general impression that Apple invented the tablet (and I'm not suggesting that the OP has taken this stance).flyersfan76 likes this.11-05-11 04:33 PMLike 1 - Perhaps, but considering that Windows 8 isn't available at the moment, well... what's the point of asking if it can be installed on the PlayBook? Besides, if the OP has a hold of a pre-release copy of Windows 8, then the OP can always try and install it on a current Windows tablet where it has a better shot at working as designed.

The version that runs on ARM processors (like the PlayBook's) is not even close to being useable.
Those of you that have run the developer copy will know that a good portion of the core features, such as full Control panel and task manager, can only be used in Desktop mode. And Desktop mode will not be ported to the ARM processors.
Once Windows 8 for ARM devices is stable then we can theoretically talk about this, but that's still a year away: assuming that Microsoft releases it at the same time as the Intel version (which i doubt)11-05-11 04:40 PMLike 0 -
- I didn't forget and if that is what we are talking about - then it could be an ok idea, because you still have the QNX infrastructure + ability to run some Windows stuff, though surely not all, similar to the Android player, but to replace the QNX stuff with Windows makes no sense..

- It'd be preety cool to have windows 8 on my playbook. Its not that I hate QNX/bb tablet os, its that I like windows. I would switch back if I disliked windows 8 on it, of course. Having the option would be cool.
There is an easy formula to buy a tablet:
Internet + Research + sift thru rumors + discern lies = Decision
Decision - Internet - Research = Stupidity
Also as for today:
Buying a playbook without owning a BlackBerry Phone, thus not able to bridge, is not a complete wrong thing to do but it's certainly not the smartest thing.
Also, the last sentence isn't true at all. Mainly because we've been promised PIM functionality for months. I wouldn't blame someone for buying a PB without a BB phone based on the aforementioned.11-06-11 05:12 AMLike 0 - There is an easy formula to buy a tablet:

11-06-11 10:59 AMLike 0 - The BlackBerry PlayBook Operating System runs circles around Microsoft Windows 8. And there will never be Microsoft Windows 8 running on a BlackBerry PlayBook. Your question borders on the absurd and indicates a complete lack of understanding of the BlackBerry PlayBook. Take your candy-coated Microsoft Windows 8 and stuff it where it belongs...on a non-BlackBerry device.
You're right about one thing... the PB will never run a complete OS that gets constant updates and support. RIM will hit a financial brick wall long before then leaving us all with an unsupported (nothing new there) tablet.
I'd like an alternative to BB's pretend OS too.11-06-11 04:35 PMLike 0 - First I'm sorry if I offended some of the great specialists in the playbook of the forum. That was not the intention. I bought my Windows Tablet over a year before a rumor about an Apple tablet existed. Oddly enough when the iPad was announced it wasn't what people expected. Most thought a Mac tablet were coming but it turned out that it was just a larger iTouch.11-07-11 07:38 AMLike 0 - Where do people come up with this junk?
