So I've just received a new Playbook from RIM - the last one having proved irreparable - and I've found I can't restore my old data to it because it's running the current version of the OS and the old one was running that update they had briefly but pulled. Is there any way round this without installing a beta? When they bring out the next update will I be able to restore?

Update to the beta OS and you'll be able to restore the Backup. Or use one of the many tools (like Dingleberry) to force load the. 668 image into your device. Check the rooting sub-boards for details.

The only thing I will add and it is a kind of "after the fact" kind of advice: I always backup my data (music, photos, docs, pdf's, video, etc) manually using Drop/Drag (windows and there are Mac equivalents I suspect). That way I am not dependent on the sometimes quirky Desktop Software. You will not be able to backup Game-scores or other settings (bookmarks, etc) manually.

    Good luck.
