Okay, I've checked other threads and I found nothing. So here goes my problem.

Ever since recent update, my PC is not connecting to Playbook. This is what I did. First my husband's playbook connected to his so I tried to connect to his and it did. So it isn't my playbook. Nevertheless, I reinstalled op twice. I reinstalled DM twice. No go. I went under setup and where you change connections (set on automatic) and change it to windows, and it did see there was something connected (thus how op reinstall) but it states can't find drivers. Went into device manager, it is not under network as my husband's but under unknown yet I went to the RIM and tried to reinstall drivers. No go. We checked both pcs and the drivers are there but don't work. I turned off antiviral and have no syc programs running so no help there. I am presently running antiviral scan because I am at wits end.

What flips me out is, it keeps coming up asking for disk. What disk??? This is so maddening because before this update, it was working great. Can someone help me, PLEASE????

I have seen several posts in the Playbook OS area and they have some good things to look at. If you open My Computer is the Playbook CD Drive there? Does your PB screen have the connected info up or the installing drivers info up?

I am on Windows 7 and I finally had to download the Beta version of DM7.0.59 to connect. Check these threads out...

You may have missed this as I almost did. When you connected your playbook it installed a file on your computer and probably displayed a note on the Playbook which said what to do if it doesn't connect. Mine connected as a cd drive (without the usual notifications) and when I clicked on it there was a folder named drivers. I think I clicked on the one named BlackBerry Device Manager, let it install, disconnected the Playbook, restarted the computer, reconnected PB and it worked as before. Hope that helps.

I did something similar to Greg. I'm using Vista.
I've wasted several hours on this today. Worse than any virus.
When I tried to run the update, it told me the files on my PC were newer than the "update"

    So I uninstalled all the bits of RIM software using control panel;
    blackberry desktop software
    blackberry device manager
    some USB drivers
    appworld something or other

    then re-booted my PC.

At the frustrating point where you go round and round with BB desktop failing to find your playbook, if you look at My Computer on your PC, the playbook is mounted as a CD. I copied the three files on the virtual CD onto my C drive (BBdevice manager.exe, setup.exe and a txt file) and ran the two executables from there starting with setup. It eventually ran the device manager software itself (again) and after more reboots of PC and playbook it eventually connected.

If this was caused by RIM they should be ashamed of themselves.
If it helps anyone I'll upload the three files somewhere.

Research In Motion should do away with the flat-client version of BlackBerry Desktop Manager and offer the same functionality through the web browser via the BlackBerry Protect service. And abandon all Microsoft ActiveX reliance which is another problem which bites users in the posterior both in the home and enterprise.

I have a slightly different problem with Desktop Manager:

It connects to my Playbook but identifies the software version as 1.0 Bundle 0

This is after I have used DM to download and install the new 2.01 Bundle 358 !

Now when I try and restore app data from a backup made before the OS upgrade, the DM gives a message that the OS is incompatible and to upgrade.

Any ideas how to get the Desktop Manager to recognize the proper OS? I have already deleted, then reinstalled DM with PC reboot.

I too cannot connect the PB to my PC (Vista). I have had not problem connecting ever in the past. Following the u/g on the PB, it will not connect. I see the PB as a disk drive in Windows Explorer, tried to run setup or Blackberry Device Manager, but always get the same error message: "The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if the Windows Installer is not currently installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance."
What does that mean??? I get that message when I try to uninstall DM to prep for reinstall, I get it when I try to reinstall DM, I get it when I try to run setup or Blackberry Device Manager. What am I missing? I can't uninstall, reinstall, OR install !!!

Thank you for the idea of copying those 3 files ..... I've had to uninstall all the BB bits and bobs on my lap top 3 times and go through this initialise process 3 times.

Desktop Mgr is as tetchy as ..... one day it sees my PB and 9700 and another day it won't see them.

Today DM sees my PB but not my 9700 .... pain in the a!!!

I've tried DM on 2 computers - one running XP and the other Win 7 ... same prob on both!!

You will need to go to program Manager and do an uninstall of the Device Manager.

    Then reboot ....

Then attach PB to PC ...

Hopefully then when you go to My Computer you will see the PB come up as a drive with a CD to be opened. Accept it and proceed as per the directions which should show on the front screen of the Playbook.

I don't want to be a burden here, but telling us yours works is not helping us search through these posts. We understand some work, and some don't. What we would like to hear is anything different than what we have tried.

    In general
This is the scenarios people have tried and it is not working:

    1)Upgrade PB

2)First time Plug in PB - get the BB Device Manager requesting to be installed.
..a)Some of us have installed it straight from the PB
..b)Others have copied locally and done the install via there.

    3)After the install is complete
..a)PC Some have rebooted before connecting their PB / Others have not
..b)PB Some have rebooted before connecting their PB / Others have not

4)Those that have Desktop Manager installed run it to see if the PB will show up. Most of us are reporting that it indicates that the version on the PB is bundle 0.0.0 and it is indicating that we should upgrade to the latest OS (Right now I (me speaking here) have enough problems and won't do it. I don't think anyone has tried yet and I can see their reasoning.

5)PB used to be mounted as Drive Z - now it does not mount.

6)When looking at device Manager, there are new devices
    ..Blackberry - Smartphone
..Network Adapters - Research In Motion Network Device
..But under the USB there is no Mass storage device for the PB which used to be there.

I have personally, along with others, tried
-on the PB File Sharing On/Off
-In BB Device Manager Properties - Mount Tablet volumes on Connect - Selected/Not Selected
-In BB Device Manager Properties - Launch File Explorer on volume mount - Selected/Not Selected

7)Originally thought to be a Windows XP problem, but it is happening on other OS with the exception of the MACs.

8)Most of us encountered the problem after following blindly the default process. I don't think any of us did anything other than just click away. After encountering the problems - yes we have been doing other things. But if the installation was perfect, then I don't think this would be a problem.

9)Most of us saw, the PB as a mounted drive, or transferred files via the BB Desktop Manager - so this is something new.

10)As an aside (my plug here) I don't know if wifi sharing worked (never tried it before) but when I try doing it now, I get a message that I do not have permissions. (I have followed various posts to the letter on how to get wifi up - so there is an additional problem.)

I think that about summarizes it.

Some of us are pretty frustrated that we have to read through many posts on mine is working - so how did you get it to work that is different than what has been mentioned above. You are enjoying your PB, and we would like to enjoy ours.

For all that have helped, THANK YOU, but now lets get this resolved with one final post. Looking to RIM to either provide an update/a fix/a post that is something different than above.

OK - Finally have a work around. (Worked both on XP and Vista because I had problems in both.)

1)On PB turn on "File Sharing".
..Go to the Playbook Options (Gear symbol at the top right of screen.)
..a)Select Storage and Sharing (Menu item on left side)
..b)On the Storage and Sharing screen, Put File Sharing to ON, if it is OFF. (just press the button)

2)Plug in PB via USB. (You'll get the device message, etc.)

3)Go to the Playbook Options (Gear symbol at the top right of screen.)
..a)Select About (First menu item on left side)
..b)On the about screen, select "Network" from the drop down at the top of the page

4)There will be different sections, the one that interests you is the USB section and specifically the IPv4 field of information.

5)Copy down the address that is displayed, it will be 4 sets of numbers (ex. 111.253.72.33 - I am certain yours will be different so don't use these)

6)On your PC go to My Computer, and where you normally type c:\, put in those numbers preceeded by 2 backslashes (ex. \\111.253.72.33\)

7)You will see in the main window, two directories, the one that concerns you is the "media". Click it to open it up like you would a normal directory and you will see the folders as you would normally see them on your PB. Now you can copy/delete as you normally were doing.

    Hope this helps.

This is accessing the PB through Wi-Fi, I just realized that Still it allows you to access your PB but speed wise, it ain't the same when it's connected through USB.

Yes, you can do this step via wifi (so I am told) - but if you look closely, I indicated that you connect the PB via USB and use the USB address (IPv4), not the wifi address (IPv4).

    1. I have looked at all of the other posts as I mentioned in original message and found no help and I have tried them all.
    2. Oops I had forgotten to mention that I am running Vista as is my husband.
    3. It never came up as a CD drive or any other drive in My Computer.
    4. My husband has wiped and reinstalling Windows on my PC. If this doesn't work, I will try what bnrnortel suggested and just work with it as best as I can.

I will update this post as to what has occurred later but let me say Thank You for All of your help and suggestions.

Thanks bnrnortel, I have tried your suggestion and is working. At least I transfer files until there is a fix.

Note: things that I have tried before this workaround.
    1. Uninstalled desktop manager, device manager, recent applications I had installed, cleaned registry, reinstalled desktop and device manager.
    2. Tried to upgrade playbook OS via DM, (though mine is updated one), but ended up in a fatal error reported by DM.
    3. Tried beta DM 7 from developer zone.
    4. Mine is vista, so tried a different pc with xp. No luck.
    5. Wifi transfer works but dead slow, so least preferred method, as my files usually is more than 2 gb.
    6. Thought of security wipe, but I was afraid that it adds another problem or even brick the tablet.

Hallelua! Thanks to my husband's intuition, a total wipe/reinstallation worked! Granted it was extreme but it worked. Good thing I love configuring my machines . Thanks to this update, now I got 2 to reconfigure. Thanks guys for all the help but for those still having problems, maybe this can help you out.

Do you mean a security wipe of the PB, and then restore it, or do a reinstallation or what? Could you lay out a few steps for me/us, and if it solved the problem of the DM seeing "0/0", and insisting on an update?
Or were you talking about a wipe of the DM only???

    Hello "Cat" -
I have tried it all, and my PC will not recognize my PB in "Computer" at all (Vista), and in the Desktop s/w it shows I am load "0", and it offers the upgrade, which I already have installed. IF I do the wipe/reinstallation which you did, is that a "security" wipe, and if so, can I do a restore afterwards and get back all my apps and documents and media??? I can get the media back easily enough, I have copied that to a folder, but do the documents come back with the restore of my backup file? Please let me know a little info on how you did the wipe/reinstallation. Thanks.....
