Have you guys noticed this? I'm a little disappointed with the speed of taking a picture. It should be instantaneousness. I had to ask me famlily to stay with the 'smile' for a few good seconds to make sure I got the pic to my liking.

I think it's on par with the Torch's camera software. Maybe a bit faster. Pretty sure RIM's working on updates to remedy this.
In camera mode:
pull down the top task bar and
select the running guy icon
It captures faster then 'A' mode. but, you need good light to prevent graininess.
Yeah, I too have noticed the glacial shutter speed with the playbook.
I hope they fix this soon - slow shutter speed is one of my pet peeves when it comes to cameras because you end up moving the camera before the shot actually gets taken 99% of the time.
It is a bit slow, but it's not a point and shoot, it's a tablet computer. I wasn't expecting digi cam performance, were you?
It's worked fine for me. I really haven't had an issue with the camera.
would be nice if it was faster
I just did a bunch of shots, it seems fast enough for a tablet, especially compared to the camera phones that I have become accustomed to. When the lighting is decent, it takes really good pictures.
I didn't had that issue until the last update... Hope gets fixed
Can someone explain this for me? How can a camera that is capable of shooting video at HD 1080p quality using the same lense take such poor quality pictures? Surely this is software dependent and if it is, why limit the capability of the photos?

First of all, 1080 is low resolution by photo standards, so don't use that as a metric for image quality. It's a lot easier to shoot 1080 video than it is to take properly lighted/balanced/focused photos.
I think it has everything to do with software. The device hardware is capable, and the camera specs are decent. Yet the PB captures photos slower than most other comparable devices on the market, and the quality is not great. Judging by the rest of the software on the device, it's probably not fully ripe yet.
As much as I love my Playbook, the one thing it will never do is take the place of my camera; not even my point and shoot. If a point and shoot is just a fill-in for a DSLR, then surely you can't expect any real quality on a tablet or cell phone camera. If you really want to make sure you capture the moment with a quality photograph, at least carry a decent point and shoot with you.
Agreed about taking photos (although they're very nice in decent lighting) but I took concert vids at the House of Blues the other night, and they turned out surprisingly good.
Having more options in the interface with a software upgrade would be good too. My 9700 has got 10 different shooting modes and I can choose three different resolutions. The PB? Not so much.

I think for a so-called 5mp camera, the quality is quite poor......
Same here. I was surprised at the speed at which it took the shot before the update.
double post
but did you all notice that the shot is captured when you remove your finger from the screen.
but remember the picture is captured when you remove your finger, not when you press the screen....
Agreed, the 3.2mp camera on my Storm2 runs laps around the PB camera. As great as the hardware is on the PB, the camera is its biggest flaw. I hope that for the PB2 that they add an AF camera and LED flash and not this crap cam they put in this one. I know it's a first gen device but it's not like they didn't have other tablets that we already on the market to try and match specs with.
Actually, I have noticed that the shot that is shown on the screen when you press the button is not the image that is stored in the camera folder.
Several times, I have pressed the button, noticed a delay, and the image that showed on the screen was blurred ... but then I went into the camera folder and noted that the actual photo taken was fine.
In other words, there is a software delay when you press the button and hear the 'click'. But it doesn't seem that there is a delay for taking the actual photo that is stored on the device.
It's like any point & shoot camera, it has shutter lag. No one has fixed it on point and shoot cameras yet, so doubtfull it will get fixed on the playbook. Even high end point and shoot cameras have some shutter lag.
You need to be in pretty good light and use good hand holding technique. Keep it as close to your body as possible or brace it against something to keep it still.
