I just updated to OS 2.0 but im disappointed that Skype is still not available. Eversince i purchased my playbook i haven't use the video call yet, since i don't have friends who uses a playbook. Is there any other way that i could use to videochat my friends? i love my playbook, but not able to use the videocall makes me sad
Yep no Skype, this has been known for a while... It was never announced for 2.0. Have you added all your email, linkedin, twitter, & Facebook accounts yet? I was surprised to find after when going into video chat that, while not close friends, I have 8 contacts that I could video chat with.
There is this new app for the Playbook that was made available yesterday in App World, "SFH/Free Video Chat" by Parabay. It's getting good reviews for those who have it in Canada, but so far, I'm not able to register the account with Parabay. In fact, I'm going to give them a call in a few minutes to find out what the problem is. That said, it's a cross platform chat app, so you can chat with someone who doesn't have a PlayBook. Go to app world under apps, IM & social networking, instant message.
Has anyone tried converting the Tango android app. It's cross platform and works quite well. I use it on my HD7 and PC and the wife has it on her Sensation.
btw, Microsoft owns Skype. I have to believe that they will make it avavilible on the Playbook sooner or later.
Belay my last, Free Video Chat by Parabay is now online. I just managed to register and log in, and just chatted with someone local who just happened to see my location. I told her I'll give her a shout later. Go for it peoples, it works.
Skype is still missing from Windows Phone 7 (even though MS own it), and with Microsoft's Windows 8 coming out soon (to compete with QNX and the playbook) its hard to believe that Microsoft would give an advantage to a competitor. Missed Skype revenue could be a problem, but is Microsoft to big to care?

I downloaded the Free Video Chat and was disappointed. Not by the actual performance (I actually haven't used that yet) but by its purpose.
It is basically a hook up chat. Not that that in itself bothers me, but I couldn't find a spot to block all calls except friends. Maybe when I play around with it I'll find something.
Also, it keeps putting me in as an 18 year old. Since I'm 57, I would love to be 18 again, but I don't think thats ever gonna happen.
Nope, NO Skype, but the PlayBook does so much that one or two missing apps would not deter me from this awesome tablet. If Skype was that important to me, I would purchase something that supported that app.

Yeah, I'm a rock 'em, sock 'em, 6'2" 185 lb 63 year old still full of romp and stomp, and it shows me as 18 (which is what's in my mind and body). You can check that you're off line and not show you as on line, but I'll get more in depth with the app later.

Skype for WP7 and Xbox360 are coming soon. MS supports multiple platforms on alot of thier products and since Skype is already multiplatform that won't change. Skype will make it's way to Playbook and BB Phones(if they ever get FFC).
Only way to get Skype is to nag Rim until they allow it. RIM had a working Skype version for BlackBerries but chose not to go with it so as not to annoy carriers.
Nagging Skype won't help. Its RIMs decision. Make your feelings known to RIM.
