When I click on the google icon it gets stalled about one third of the way. I cannot seem to bring up any search engine or hotmail, my podcasts, facebook, everything really. Heeeeeelp!

Hi could you be a bit more specific as there is no google icon for the native browser. Are you using a side loaded android app?
If it is the playbook stock browser to get the search settings... Open browser app, 1 swipe down from the top of the app then click on SETTINGS (General tab 3rd option)

There is a Google bookmark under the stock browser. Perhaps that is what he means. On my PB it works. You can also put a Google launch icon on the desktop which is a very nice feature of the stock browser.
