After the latest update, is there any difference between using the bridge and tethering?

    try app world?
it does not work with the bridge on.
    maybe tethering would work???

    Yes.

Speed difference. Bridge is much slower on heavy HTML and streaming media.
App world does not works on either and only on WiFi.
Flash is a pain using the Bridge.

    Tether faster, bridge slower.

Also certain things like using the Amazon Cloud player for music or Amazon Prime to stream movies, I have not gotten to work when bridged, but when in a wifi hotspot those things work like a charm, I thinking maybe its the data transfer rate on bluetooth on bridge?

Tethering probably is a little bit better, but bridge, the price is right!

Can anyone quantitate the difference here for us? And are we implying that tethering is via USB?

And we are talking about "regular browser when bridged" (not Bridge Browser) vs regular browser when tethered.

Thanks - nice to nail down some of thew new changes!!

Two options that I know work on PB bridged etc :

CNET Bandwidth Meter: Online Speed Test - CNET Reviews

    http://www.dslreports.com/mspeed?jisok=1

    again, please document conditions :
    1) USB connected, no wifi, tethered (and phone tethered to)
    2) BT connected, no wifi, tethered (and phone tethered to)
    3) BT connected and bridged, no wifi, ?X bars, regular browser
    4) BT connected and bridged, no wifi, ?Xbars, Bridge browser

    Thanks all!!!

I'm living in UAE . It's really good, I can watch youtbe videos very nice and smooth over etisalat unlimited plan ,3g and bridge. but i think the results of speedtest is wrong because it tells me I'm on a 200kbps connection but i'm sure its wrong. because i can download files at 800kbps to 1mbps on the move.

I wonder if the new bridge may be RIMS big FU to At&t. At first rim tried to differentiate bridge from tether, but if att says they're the same, so be it. The new bridge has changed my whole view of the PB.

    Tethered:

    Down: 1.42 mbps

I can't believe you guys are getting better results from bridge then tethering. I'm going to have to try this. I know mine is faster tethering then it is using the reg browser and bridge.

Verrrry interesting. I dont have objective data, but jives with my gestalt - comparing to my laptop tethered via 9650 compared to pb using new OS...

I suspect they're close - if not the same. Any others data for reference points is welcome!!

Since you can not usb a phone to the playbook usb is of no concern.

Using a tour with .484 on it.

Bridge using the wifi browser with wifi turned off at Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test. Run 4 times in a row.
    Ping- 535 Download- .38 Upload- .09
    Ping- 713 Down- .26 Up- .17
    Ping- 492 Down- .70 Up- .14
    ping- 521 down-.67 up- .18

Tether with bridge off on both phone and PB, same deal as above.
    ping- 189 down- 1.01 up- .23
    ping- 170 down- .84 up- .24
    ping- 191 down- 1.02 up- .27
    ping- 178 down- 1.25 up- .26

I find that my bridge is considerably slower than tethering. I think it is mainly because Vodacom uses the RIM server in Manchester whereas with tethering I utilise a nearby base station.

Thanks KBZ1960 - Interesting findings. Not sure why we're seeing varied #'s. Your numbers on bridge are slower (I avg around .6-.8 down) than I've been getting, yet we're both on CDMA.

    Keep it coming others.

I get an error trying to read the download file. Not sure what's going on with it.

this is bridged (I don't have a tethering plan with AT&T).

Ping at 233/237/235 before the error (tried three times).

Just realized I had wifi turned on on the phone (9800) and my Firm's firewall was blocking the test.

    With wifi on phone off:

    Test 1: ping 481; DL 0.31; UL 0.08

Really bad, but the test is indicating that it's routing me through a server in Wichita KS (I'm in NYC), so that explains it. The RIM IP address is throwing the test off.

For those tethering, do you have a tethering plan with your carrier? I asked because you are able to set up tethering, but there is no indication that it is working or not. (Just a message that there may be additional charges.)

Also, does the tethering work through bluetooth or do you have to hard wire it?

    thanks,

    Kris

    My tests:

    bridge
    ping 322
    down .76
    up .13

    tether

    ping 128
    down 1.03
    up .41

I'm quoting best out of 4 tests on speedtest.net. I had a fair amount of variance in the results...likely due to inconsistent network reception (this is rogers in toronto).
