Magellan was updated to 3.1.2. Any release notes to what has changed?
Well, I downloaded the update today............still getting version 1.3.0!!!! What up?
^ Mine two PB's updated to 3.1.2, no problems.
3.1.1 was a nice improvement with the map cache, so looking forward to this latest update.
Magellan Compass is one of the best apps out there for the PlayBook, and well worth the money IMO.
kdeckels: don't think the app works thru the bridge, I use my wifi hotspot when outside of home or public wifi, and need to get directions downloaded.
The developers posted this on blog.o2interactive.com
Version 3.1.2 has been released to App World for approval. This is a patch release to allow map cache to occur over a larger region at one time. Before the user had to pan around after each cached region (when getting more than 6 map levels)to get large territories.
Upgraded today from the uk and now it has put me to version 1.3.0 ffs whats going on with this...
I think it has been discussed - Delete and reinstall.

I've deleted and reinstalled 3 times. STILL get 1.3.0............ I have yet to be able to get the new build. Sacramento, CA.
Some suggestions, based on experience using maemo mapper (the old Nokia tablets). It was simple, but very usable offline. I've done many driving trips with it.
Excuse me if some of this is already implemented or in the works. Take this in the best possible way - I think Magellen has potential, but in experimenting with it, I can't depend on it yet.
- Maemo mapper used the touch screen on the map a lot - press and hold a location, and a menu would pop up - create a POI 'here', set the current GPS location to 'here', download a route to 'here', etc. It was simple and effective way to bring up the specific menu for the action wanted.
- If user is deliberately caching maps, offer the choice to do it along a route (ie within a few tiles of the route), or by the map area shown in the display (with ability to choose the map levels.) I would often download the tiles along a route between cities to a certain precision, but do a more extensive cache of the area around the destination.
- Download and cache map tiles in one operation - it is two separate operations now. Warn the user how many tiles and space it is before downloading.
- Toggle on and off whether the maps will 'auto-download'. If I'm travelling on a roaming plan, and pre-cached the maps, I don't want to be surprised that it is downloading more data.
That's all I can think of right now. Thanks for Magellen - keep the good work coming.
RIM is still trying to resolve the downgrade issue for some users. A work around is to request a refund and re-purchase it at the current price. If you dont want to do that, we have to wait for RIM to fix the problem. We are in touch with them daily (mostly to complain).
I constantly get an error message: An error occurred in determining the directions. What is causing this?
I paid for mine did an update and it gave me the first version. I seen from your website there is a problem. Please pm me.
The directions error is typically caused from one of the waypoints not able to be routed to or from. Situations that I have seen have been that the waypoints are too far from a road or that the road is designated as a one-way road and you are trying to go the wrong way. The error is produced from the server and only gives a high level error. No details are given why it failed to produce a route. Try producing a route from well known streets over a short distance and then try to expand from there until you get the error. Then look at the road to see what might cause it. All road data is from OSM, so depending on what part of the world you in, the data might be of poorer quality.
jtegen, the route begins at my home which has existed for about 5 years. I've tried other routes as well and it is hit or miss whether or not I will get the error.
Write to rim, ask for a refund and repurchase the app to avoid this RIM issue:

Add a bluetooth handsfree speakerphone option. If the Playbook is on the dashboard and tethered to the phone, it makes sense to be able to answer the phone on it.
add rear (of playbook) camera recording with a cached loop of memory, so if turned on, driver could hit "save" if there was something important that happened on the road in front of them, and have a video of it. If not it lust keeps re-recording over the same spot in memory, so it doesn't hog a lot.
@dagerlach: Let us know the actual addresses so we can dig deeper. Submit at our blog (o2 interactive).
So I went to Indy on Saturday because it wasn't hot enough in Chicago...
Actually, it was for an auction. Anyway, the mapping and route worked fine for me. I pre-cached Indy and Lafayette and let it pickup tiles along I-65 over bridge.
The issue was trying to get directions from downtown Indy to a restaurant 40 miles away in Anderson. I know the town, state and name of said restaurant, yet there's no way to put these together. I either have to know the address or would have to page through list after list of restaurants.
I ended up looking up the restaurant on my BB using Poynt, then entering the address into Magellan. Really??
As an aside, selecting a 50 mile radius and looking up restaurants only got me through a 4 mile radius. Not very helpful, either.
Finally, it appears that since I've gotten over 700MB of tiles, I can no longer back the PB up. I suppose I'll have to clear the cache and see what happens.
My bb died and I've been using your app with maps cached. I've got to say I love it. I haven't used it for routing yet just GPS tracking and it's been brilliant. Thanks for continuing to support this product.
life is better with root.
in cars its around 9 to 10 gigs worth of data
After taking a trip from Detroit to Alabama with the mc and my playbook this is what i don't like.
1. caching didn't seem to work. I set it 5gigs when playing if mc before the trip. set it to level 16.
2. need to be able to set volume separate from the playbooks master volume. we had the playbook tethered to the ford sync system to stream music but could not hear the turn by turn.
3.need to find a way to use the gps on the phone. It keep saying we where off route due to a road next to the highway.
4. i turned off the turn by turn on accent because my jeans touched the screen.( had the playbook in the magnetic Velcro edcroed to the center console).
@hytran: You can delete tiles by region as well.
We are making improvements for the place searches. Some providers do not allow for text searches (odd, we know). More and different POI providers are being added.
Applications cannot control the volume independently to other apps. This has been asked for, but who knows when it might be available.
We appreciate all feedback. We're working on bring all this to the BB10 phones, so new services being added for that are also be folded back to the PlayBook.
@jtegen
I posted the address for you all to evaluate on the blog. Hopefully, it's in the right place.
I used Magellan Compass on a trip from Washington DC to New York City yesterday. I cached the route panels before leaving and had my BB phone set as a HotSpot. MC worked great. The update from a few weeks back fixed my previous complaints.
The only problem I had was my car charger could not keep up so the battery slowly drained. Next time I will put the inverter in and use the PB rapid charger.
Good job o2.
I did the inverter thing on my trip to Indy. It seemed to maintain the charge but wouldn't go to 100% unless I turned the screen off. Just the nature of the beast I guess. Not blaming the app at all :)
In general, if you get an error during routing, it is most likely caused by the Open Street Map data. Best to check the end points in OSM MapQuest editor (need to create an account) to inspect the roads. In the US, a fair amount of the data is not up to date or correct. Common issues include, one way roads when they are not one way, and roads that are not joined together (they overlap or appear to be close). It helps OSM and everyone if everyone inspects their area of the world for up to date roads and road information being correct (type, speed, connections, fidelity, etc.)
