So I'm looking to buy a BB phone that will tether w/my Playbook. A big priority is something that will allow WiFi calling through Google Voice in Canada. Given that I am a cheap dude who does not need the latest and the greatest, I'm hoping that I can find a BB phone that will fit this purpose, though I'm not even sure sure this is possible. I am pay as you go with Fido and not a "heavy user", but would like to upgrade my dumbphone to a BB product that will work with my Playbook.

Near as I can figure, the Curve 8320 (unlocked 129.99) might work, or the Storm 9530 (unlocked $149.99) might work.

I travel to weird places, so wifi access is a must.

Any shared wisdom is greatly appreciated, and thank you in advance!

If you're going to purchase a Curve, at least look at the prices for the Curve 8520.

Thank you for the advice! 8520 unlocked Is $199 vs $129 for the 8320. I may be cheap, but I'm not willing to shoot myself in the foot. Am willing to spend the extra $70 for the 8520, is it worth it and if you have time the time could you (or anyone else) tell me why? Thanks and please forgive my ignorance! I suspect that there are a lot of people like me out there now, people who bought the discounted PB (which I love!), and yet are clueless about BB phones.

I don't think a Curve 8320 will work because BB Bridge needs OS 5 and above to work and I think the Curve 8320 ends at 4.6 or something like that.

I think you're correct. I now recall reading the same thing somewhere and that the 8330 is the lowest end model that will run 5.0. However, I had no idea that pre 5.0 will not work with PB! Thank you.

The 8520 will work but if you have any plans of using internet tethering off of this phone - it will be awfully slow because it only runs on "EDGE" also the camera does not have a flash. You are almost better off to look for a used like new Bold 9700 or Bold 9780 on Craigslist because they should sell for around $200 bucks in like new condition. Be sure to look for one with a box and all original acessories though (less chance of buying a stolen unit) or ask for proof of purchase or phone the carrier to confirm phone is legit.

I think the cheapest phone that has flash/3G is the Storm 1?
Not sure what the price on a used 9700 is.....

OK and thanks Buwee and California. So now I'm at the $200 pricepoint. Bold 9000, Bold 9650,Storm 9530 or the Curve 8520? And again, thanks for sharing your wisdom!

I don't know what part of Canada you are in but in the Vancouver area you should be able to get a Bold 9700 in like new condition for less than $200.00. If internet speed is important I would not go with any of the Storm series because they will not work on the 3G network of Fido - they will only work on Telus or Bell's CDMA network on 3G. The 8520 is a GSM phone but only 2G or "EDGE" The Bold 9000 is a nice phone and will work on 3G but it is a pretty old phone. I don't know much about the 9650 but I think it is pretty much the same as the 9700 except it also supports CDMA. I have had the 9700 and the 9780 and have paired it with my Playbook and it has worked very well. FYI ... I sold my 9700 for $150.00 and my 9780 for $175.00 and both were in like new condition with original un-opened acessories and box so you should be able to find them for around the same price.

find a good trusty used bold 9700.
I would say that is as low as you should go with playbook.

But put OS 5.0 on it - OS 6 is a memory hog and doesnt buy you much other than different updated graphics style which isnt even as nice IMO.

    Most seem to hate Storms.

Well OS6 will give you a webkit browser...that alone may be the deciding factor for some, but again, your call. As far as devices, I wouldn't go any lower than the 9700, and arguably if you can get a 9780 for nearly the same price you will benefit from a newer os and double the memory.

Good luck in your hunt for a phone!

You're definitely gonna be better off picking up the more advanced phone over a cheaper one, which can often diminish the experience, sometimes to the point of hatred. There is a reason why some models go so cheaply, after all. Get a 'workhorse' model, liKe 9700, and you'll probably find a better match for your PlayBook.

I can say going from a tour to a torch 9850 is night and day both on the phone and interaction with my playbook. I think if you find a good used OS6 device would be best but it did work OK with my tour just not as fast etc.

Since you are on Fido, you want to look for a Rogers or AT&T phone. Unlocked doesn't matter as they can be unlocked for under five dollars using a code from a web site or ebay.

Google voice may not work in Canada, you might want to do some research on it.

I use a 9800 with my PB. The craigslist in my area(northeast US)has many around the 200$ price point.
We also have a 9700 paired with another PB. The bridge speeds seems about the same but the torch has a much better camera and screen.
I would go for the most recent phone you can afford. Just a better overall experience. There are even a few 9780's in the 200$ range.

My vote is also for the 9780. And in Toronto you can find a near mint one with accessories for $150-$200 easy so it's really a no-brainer.
