Might I suggest a blackberry with a social plan. That is what I have I think its the best of both worlds, you get bbm and facebook msn twitter and all that but at only 30 a month.

GoodLuck & if you live in canada prepare to get ripped off!

This is only true if you own or are buying a no term phone from the 3 major carriers;Bell, Rogers and Telus. The sub-carriers like Fido, Koodo and Solo do no but they are still tied to major carriers. Windmobile is a small carrier which also offer no contract. But really a no contract phone is really a gimmick unless you own your own phone or no term phone where you absorb the full cost of the phone. The phones then are also capable to be used outside of Canafa with other SIM cards.
Nope, aside from a few phones, anything you buy from a Canadian carrier, even at full price is locked from use on other carriers. You have to oay to get it unlocked by a thirf party, which is completely independent of your contract.

Buy a 2nd hand BB Smartphone. Make sure it's a good one, free and clear of contracts, not stolen, not broken, unlocked. Probably about $200 to $300.

Should be able to get it cheaper than that. A 9300 sells $150 brand new from Mobilicity.

Virgin Mobile has the bb curve 9300. Its zero dollars no data package, so it was around $35 a month.

I have a BB8100 Pearl, no data plan. Can I connect it to Playbook, just to share contacts, calendar, notes, etc?
