My 8 month old 64GB PlayBook started giving trouble with the backlight flickering. At first it was minimal and I could ignore it, but it got to the point that it was more off than on. Eventually in order to get it to work, I had to grab it at the top left and bottom right and kind of twist it.

I figured it was probably a loose connection. My experience with RIM/BlackBerry and my last 32GB PlayBook RMA was all bad - it went in for a bad camera and came back essentially dead, and they refused to fix it. So I Youtubed a teardown vid, got out my disassembly tools and went for it.

Now it won't turn on at all!

So I have a Lenovo Win 8 tablet in my Amazon cart. Comes with a built-in digitizer for handwriting recognition and runs the full office suite on Win 8 Pro with an Atom CPU. Costs $300 more than an equivalent PB but I am tired of RIM/BlackBerry.

I guess the only way I will see BB10 on the PB is via my wife's or daughter's 16GB PlayBooks. Theirs still work for now (wifey hardly uses hers, bought 2 months after launch date at full price), but my daughter is interested in the Lenovo... And I am waiting to see what the Z10 brings when it launches here next week. I suspect the carrier will alter the data plans so if I want to trade up from my 9810 it'll mean no more unlimited data (grandfathered plan), in which case I might as well have an Android or Windows phone.

Well, if you left no signs of tinkering, you might still call them. Most have had good luck but there are examples like your prior one unfortunately.

The PB has a one year warranty to the original purchaser. It also has 90 free Tech support. I do not know how Rim deals with "quasi-tech support v. warranty"

I'm not sure who your carrier is but call retention to try and organize a subsidized upgrade at which point (my recent experience is with Rogers) you should be able to pick up in a store (best to go to a dedicated carrier store to minimize potential difficulty) or have them ship it right to you... Any dedicated carrier store should have a back-end number to reach customer service if they can't see/authorize whatever deal you have set up through retention. If you don't have any luck try back a different time with a different retention rep until you find someone willing/able to help.

Pressing it briefly causes the pb to go into Standby. Pressing it longer will POWER OFF the pb. Holding it about 15-20 seconds will restart/reboot and sometimes clear the pb if it seems to have stalled - screen either on but no reactions or dark gray (backlight) but no reaction.

To fix an issue, try these in order:

Restart using the Battery Icon and press Restart

Press and hold the Power button for 10-15 seconds. Then leave it for 20-30 seconds and see if it restarts.

    To REbOOT:
Press and HOLD all three keys for about 10 - 20 seconds: PowerOn, VolUp and VolDown. Start with the PowerButton. Keep holding past the 3-choice options screen. If you hear a shutter type sound, you've taken a Screen Shot and probably missed the PowerButton.

you shouldn'tve broken into it,,, it's under warranty for a year,,, like F2 said, if you didn't leave any fingerprints, you might have a chance on getting a replacement,,, i am wondering tho, @ the coincidence of this issue AFTER you cracked the seal,,, when in doubt, leave it alone & call the pros,,, remember, if you try & fix something & it doesn't work out, it'll cost you twice as much to fix it than it would've originally,,, there's a story that goes like this; there was a guy, (not this guy), that thought it was easy to work on a motorcycle & thought he'd save a few bucks by doing himself,,, tearing it down was easy enough, but when it came time to put it back together, things didn't go so well,,, so forelorn & humbled he rolled a wheelbarrow full of parts to the local wrench & to add salt to the wound his first words were," so i take it the operation wasn't a success??? i hope you brought cash..."

Just to be clear, Blackberry does not honour the warranty for PlayBook purchased in one country and used in another. My first PB was purchased in Miami and used in Barbados. When the camera went bad I managed to get it RMA'd, but then they did not want to send it back until I raised a racket. It took 3 weeks to get it back. It was faulty (screen did not work) when I got it back from them (out of the RMA box) they acknowledged that they returned it faulty but refused to RMA it again. It costs more to ship it FedEx than to buy a new one.

I tried all the button press options (hold down power, hold down all three etc) but nothing works. Oddly enough if I put it on charge I get the flashing green light. I suspect something is out of alignment somewhere.

    Still getting the Lenovo though.

As for the Z10, I will see when it launches. I might be buying 3 so that's a bit of leverage.
