i have the digital version of a factory service manual for one of my vehicles. its hundreds of pages worth of instructions with detailed pictures. the only problem is that these hundreds (thousands) of pictures being on the device is getting in the way of uploading to crackberry or photobucket for example.

when i hit upload and choose playbook as the source it scans for all image files anywhere on the device and lets me choose from them. on the other non-fruity operating system you could add a blank file and name it ".nomedia" to a folder and that would be excluded from the galleries. is it possible to do that with the playbook?

I think you can CREATE a folder under media (try Air browser for instance) but don't play with existing ones ... they are mandatory and must stay "as-is".

oh, im not modifiying any system folders. the manual was placed in the "documents" folder in the "sandbox". so if looking at it while connected to a comp, its z:/documents/saturnfsm...
    etc etc

I don't think you can avoid that problem and I also hope they fix it. I have the same problem with just my vacation jpgs. More than 1,000 images to sort through if I want to send the camera picture I just took. And you canNOT hide them as mentioned in the previous reply. I've got jpgs in other folders and they show up anyway. It seems to scan the entire pb for any media files.

Nope. It just scans everything under /accounts/1000/shared (the "media" share).
Applications can sandbox their own media files elsewhere.
I don't know if it's a bad thing that you should be able to find media that you've placed in a sharing folder on the device. Being able to sift through it more efficiently is the correct answer.

I guess I was a bit too global in reply. I believe it searches everywhere that I can place files on my pb. So if there's a jpg in the doc/print/pic/voice/misc, I think it will find it.

I would not mind having a program or app that gave me the power to copy/move stuff to other folders not accessible to mere mortals such as myself, I would like that.

Have you thought about making a pdf file of the images, and add the pdf to your playbook? This would move them out of the media selection. It could also save space while maintaining the resolution of the images.

A bit of a work around but something i have always done in practice as i find making image pdfs for instructions, teardowns or other such items aids in keeping the organized and the images in order

If you "hide" the files in the shared folders, they will no longer appear in the media searches.
One tool that allows you to do this is "My File Manager" Buy My File Manager - Download My File Manager - Buy Apps from BlackBerry App World

If you want to access the file, you have to unhide before you can open it.

Works well to hide violent/sexy music videos from my kids - and yes battery, it could be used to hide porn too.
