Also known as Tamarack here in Saskatchewan.

That's also what they are called in the Eastern US. The picture was taken in a basin where the largest known tree of its type (in WA?) use to stand - it finally succumbed and its fallen skeleton lies uphill of the basin. I saw it years ago before it died (sniff).
Shoot: don't mention oaks. I've got 10 pin oaks in my parking strips and they drop leaves for months and months making raking a real chore. Some hold their leaves till Spring, looking withered and dead for months!
