- that list is total bull****....some of those apply to the PB and every other tablet tooBrokenSaint and MobileMadness002 like this.07-31-11 05:25 PMLike 2
- True. But I think they choose to use iPad as the example since it's the most popular right now.
There is a school in Florida thinking of spending $700, 000 on iPads to replace their text books. I wonder how that will go...

- Again, the focus is on Apple because it's THE most popular but this list is ridiculous. I'm sure fanboys will find ways to back this up.
#1 It's Expensive
What's the price difference, $20 for the 16GB PlayBook.
#2 It's Not the Best Solution for Note-Taking or Editing Documents
Without a physical keyboard or you are a master on touch, again this applies to every Tablet out there.
#3 It's Too Distracting
It's only #3 and the OP ran out already. Tablets are very popular, makes no difference which one you're using.
#4 It's Ultra-Portable and Ultra-Droppable
See above.
#5 What Makes it Desirable to your Kid is What Makes it Desirable to Criminals
See above.
#6 It's Meant for the Enjoyment of One Person, Which Means Social Seclusion
I have no words, it's getting really ridiculous.
#7 Digital Text Books are a Marvel, but There's No Secondary Market
What?!?!
#8 It's a Status Symbol, Plain and Simple
LMFAO
#9 It'll Already be Old Technology by the Time You Buy It
Captain obvious here.
#10 They'll Also Want a Laptop, Too
No necessarily as I'm sure they can find the right App. I have several when I had my iPad.07-31-11 05:53 PMLike 0 - that list can apply to any tablet really. Im going to college this coming year as a freshman, and I have both an iPad and I'm getting a new MacBookPro. I wouldn't use just my iPad. But a lot on that list applies to laptops too (criminals? Status symbol? Meant for one person mainly? Old tech?)
I used my iPad (1st gen) for all of my notes my senior year of high school and did perfectly fine.
That list is kinda ridiculous and there are definitely other, easier to explain reasons why a laptop is better than an ipad for note taking...07-31-11 06:00 PMLike 0 -
- The list says iPad because its the only tablet the mainstream cares about. Same goes for any tablet. There are many apple fans that have no idea what a playbook is. Nobody is saying the playbook is better....technically, but by posted in a Playbook section in Crackberry, its hard not to question if this is the OP's argument.
It's just saying that tablets are not a substitute for laptops in the vast majority of cases.
So let's not get all defensive here people. The ipad is great, like many tablets. Just not as useful as a laptop for kids in school. Nobody should be hating on it specifically, it was just because more people know what an ipad is over what a tablet is.Last edited by chiefbroski; 07-31-11 at 07:04 PM.
07-31-11 07:00 PMLike 4 - exactly...tablets cant replace laptops nor should anyone expect them too. most people do far more than surf the web and check email with their laptops. I will admit that the ipad does have a ton of great apps that can do quite a bit that i never though a tablet could do though.chiefbroski likes this.07-31-11 07:38 PMLike 1
- Ya there's no way a tablet will replace a laptop for anyone that does anything more than surf the net07-31-11 08:00 PMLike 0

And the 'list' and the thread title are nothing more than troll bait.07-31-11 08:06 PMLike 0 -
- What exactly is an "iFan" though? I have been using iOS for approx 1 month now after 7 YEARS of nothing but BB. I consider myself a BB fan, but I do expect more from RIM. and as soon as they deliver a device that compares to MY user experience with my iOS stuff I'm right back with them. Happily. I'm still here so I can keep up with what is going on and follow along with when "The" update occurs for the PB and to hear first hand reactions to the new BB devices. I honestly want RIM to succeed and flourish. A lot of my friends and my city require it.

07-31-11 08:18 PMLike 0 - Yea that list is nonsense might as well said that about every tablet out there. I guess the iPad has the great name recognition of Vaseline in the world of petroleum jelly? Or Band-Aids? Or Doritos? Or a better comparison, iPods to MP3 players.
Tablets simply cannot replace laptops the way they are now, but I do think they can replace netbooks...07-31-11 09:40 PMLike 0 - I actually sold my 3G netbook to fund help fund my launch day 64gb PlayBook. And I'll give it this, the PB browser kicked the crap out of my netbook for speed and function. But I felt like I had spent just shy of $800 after tax on a nifty browser. There was a certain level of disappointment/ buyers remorse there.07-31-11 09:54 PMLike 0

From the taxpayer's bottomless wallets? Because the teachers want toys? What's wrong with at least Kindles?
I give them one year of service max. Homework? ha they will be used for games and porn surfing.
Can 't wait to see the pile of thrashed, broken iPads with Graffiti scrawled all over the touchscreen - then the teachers will be begging and whining for more money... "it's for the Chiiiildren!"

That's fine, except your Kindle idea would've been just as vulnerable to graffiti and/or breaking.07-31-11 10:11 PMLike 0 - "Not only can you save money, a laptop will enable students to do all the things they need to do like write 500-word papers -- easier and more conveniently."
First off, I've never been to a school where they gave out <1000 word papers, so please let me know which schools these are!
Secondly, just get a BlueTooth keyboard. If you honestly think you're fine with a touchscreen for typing long essays, you deserve to lose your money... With a Bluetooth keyboard, I've managed some long files with no less work than a laptop, and in fact it was less work because I'd have had to boot up my laptop and set it up, whereas on the PlayBook just turn the keyboard on, wake the PlayBook and open Word to go. I'm sure that typing on a Bluetooth keyboard is no harder on an iPad, but I'll admit I've never tried.08-01-11 07:10 AMLike 0
