A friend told me he connects a USB keyboard to his Tablet (forgot what maker it was.. I think it was a Toshiba)...

I was wondering if you could connect a USB keyboard to a Playbook using a USB FEMALE TO MICRO USB MALE ADAPTER?

Or does the usb interface from the playbook is for Sync and charging only?

I know there are bluetooth keyboards out there that do the trick, but I was just curious about this.

Your friend probably has the Toshiba Thrive which has a full size regular USB port. If, as some have suggested, the Playbook is capable of doing these things, it has no USB host function yet.

It was alluded to very early on (by RIM) ..Let me see if I can track down the interview where it was mentioned. May take me a while, but I will try to find it.

The hardware can support usb host mode but it is not enabled yet.

Here are some very old links...

There are some threads, such as

Where if you ssh to your playbook you can actually see the commands that show options for turning on and off the host mode. Some other dev mentioned in the thread that he noticed work was being done with respect to usb host mode by looking at the files.

Chalk this up as a feature hoped to be released in 2.0
