Frustrating email setup problem
aaaaaa the most frustrating thing is happening, i cannot setup exchange email from my university on my playbook ,,,,
first of all, i went to computer support and the guy saw my playbook and said.. if it were a popular device we would have setup instructions for it... (but they have email setup guidelines for the blackberry smartphone).. i dont care about his opinion about my device, i want my email setup.. so after arguing with him he agreed to take a look... jeeez man
so he started of by saying, i'll take the instructions we have for the storm as thats the most similar to ur devie (the playbook) i couldnt be bothered to argue with him on his ignorance.... eventually, he goes this is a really good device for 130 pounds.. i have the ipad but i might get one for my little one... i guess he was tryna make a sly comment there by taking the p*ss... he said, i guess the reason you were so pushy is because i was meant to use this device and see how good it is... i dont know if he was chatting sh*t but i didnt care
any way the frustration is when i type my email and password, it asks me to go to advanced settings... and under server address and port (and username etc) the information written is absolutely 100% correct... he even opened up the email on the desktop to double check the server address (which shows on the address field)
the port that is used is open and allowed at my uni... so does anybody kno what this could be??
the error message i recieve is that the server address for my account is not responding.. it then follows with the server name in your account settings might be incorrect or server might be temporarily offline... all of which we confirmed were 100% correct.... any ideas???
Re: Frustrating email setup problem
If you can set it up on a computer or smartphone you should be able to set it up on a PlayBook. The only thing that might stop you would be a firewall which blocks your access through the WiFi connection. If the WiFi is not connected I'm not sure you can connect over bridge/cellular for the native mail client - I remember it failing for me when I was away from wifi but not sure if that was a timeout or not supported.
Check the following settings: (Playbook Settings > Accounts)
your username and password to login on the server (name might be simple "username" or it could use "email@domain" format).
mail server address (full.server.name). You could also try the numeric IP address.
network port (depends on server type, POP3 will probably be 110, IMAP varies depending on encryption and authentication. Originally set at server by the server operator and will depend on encryption type).
Encryption type (Off/SSL/TLS) - you can experiment here and see if it works. (IMAP server on SSL encryption probably uses port 993)
You will have similar settings for outbound mail, and the answers may be different.
Re: Frustrating email setup problem
well thats the thing, it set up on my 9900 without an issue (jst username and password)... i have used like 4 different wifi connections and tried each of those (at uni, home, etc)
with the username we tried all of the combinations... we were doing it with exchange as the guy said imap and pop accounts wont work.. so imap and pop options were not there.. justb the server address... berry berry confused :s
Re: Frustrating email setup problem
Don't know what it is but many have trouble with school and work exchange servers. Ever think about using the bridge email from your phone if that is working?
Re: Frustrating email setup problem
yes, using bridge seems to be the only working alternative....

Not necessarily. If you can't get the native Messages to work, you might try using android Email. This app is already installed on your PB- you just need an app launcher to access it- Ghost Commander is one, Quick App Manager is another (both free in app world). If you use Quick App Manager, open the app, find the email icon on the screen, tap it and then choose open. Once Email is open, follow the instructions to set up your account. With Email, you'll still get notifications of incoming mail, you just won't be able to launch the app from the notification bar.
Re: Frustrating email setup problem
oh many thanks, ill give that a try now!! tbh, i dont launch apps from the notification bar anywaym i always just go straight for the red splat on the messages icon on the homescreen.. so this might work!! ill keep you guys posted
Re: Frustrating email setup problem
if all the ports etc. are correct on the PB and open at Uni side, then maybe it's the way you connect that's wrong: if for instance you are wifi-connected, did you check with a different machine that your wifi there accepts transmitting on this port?

sorry can i ask also, quick app manager is closed, will i still get a notification when i recieve an email?
Re: Frustrating email setup problem
this worked!!! great solution... although its frustrating that all i had to do was enter my details and done.... i dont understand why this isnt happening with native messaging as i would much rather have this here!!!! its much nicer, looks nicer and works nicer!

Yes. You should get notifications regardless whether Quick App Manager is open or closed. There are a couple of other advantages over the native Messages app- one is that you can load more than 30 days worth of messages on it, and two, if you want to add attachments, you don't use the native File Browser but can use an android browser that sees the PB's folder structure. Ghost Commander is probably the best for this.
Re: Frustrating email setup problem
thx pacoman...i think i will try this also. i too cannot add my exchange account on 2.1.0.1032. i was able to add it to the beta, 2.1.0.840. guess i may hafta ditch the native PIM apps and use the android ones...shame
